American rapper A$AP Rocky has been allowed to leave Sweden and return to the U.S. after spending almost a month in jail for an assault case. The rapper will remain free until at least August 14, when the verdict in the case will be announced.
The 30-year-old rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, shared a heartfelt message to fans on Instagram following his release.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of my fans, friends and anyone across the globe who supported me during these last few weeks. I cant begin to describe how grateful I am for all of you,” A$AP Rocky wrote.
“This has been a very difficult and humbling experience,” he added. “I want to thank the court for allowing me, Bladi and Thoto to return to our family and friends thanks again for all of the love and support.”
A$AP Rocky was arrested in Sweden last month for suspected assault. According to police officials, Rocky was arrested for “gross assault” in Stockholm along with two other people.
“A$AP Rocky released from prison and on his way home to the United States from Sweden. It was a Rocky Week, get home ASAP A$AP!” U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted.
Trump sought to intervene in the matter and even offered to “personally vouch” for the jailed rapper in a phone call with Sweden’s Prime Minister.
The president said he was urged to address the issue by the first lady and celebrities including Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West.
In court on Friday, prosecutors asked that Rocky get a six-month sentence during closing arguments. Rocky told the court he thought community service would be a proper punishment for him.
