Downton Abbey's film sequel has finally revealed its title – Downton Abbey: A New Era.

The second venture into the big screen for the period drama had previously been known as Downton Abbey 2, but has now been given its official name.

A New Era is set to debut in cinemas on Friday, March 18, 2022 and fans are already eager to see what will happen to the cast next.

While all of the main cast have been confirmed for the new instalment, there have also been some exciting guest star signings, who will include Dominic West, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock and Nathalie Baye.

Dominic is best known for his roles in hit TV series The Wire and The Affair, and more recently showed off his period drama credentials in BBC series The Pursuit of Love, where he appeared alongside former Downton star Lily James.

The pair had hit headlines previously when they were spotted appearing to kiss on a weekend in Rome, forcing Dominic and his wife to make a statement that they were still happily married.

Lily didn't return for the first Downton Abbey film as her character Lady Rose had moved to New York in 2015, but it isn't clear whether she could be back in the cast for the second instalment.

The first Downton Abbey movie saw the King and Queen visit the family home for a spectacular ball, but with few plot details released for the second film, fans can't wait to find out what will happen next.

Its title suggests that change could be in the air at the Abbey and for the members of the Crawley family.

Stars including Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Joanne Froggatt and Laura Carmichael are all expected to return and creator Julian Fellowes has hinted at one possible plot twist.

At the end of the first film, references were made to Maggie's character the Dowager facing death as Violet Crawley was said to have an illness likely to kill her.

However, Julian has since said: "We should remember that at the end of the film, Maggie was by no means dead. You imagine Violet is on her way out, but that decision hasn't been reached."
