James Haskell has back-up builder job if he ever gets cancelled

James Haskell, 38, opened up about an alternative career path as he spoke about the possibility of “getting cancelled” in an interview with fellow former athlete Gabby Logan, 49.

The ex-England rugby player revealed he had a surprising set of skills outside of the sporting world.

“It’s weird, because they say that sports people have two deaths, really,” James explained during an episode of her podcast The Mid Point with Gabby Logan.

“You kind of have your first retirement and then you have your second retirement.

“Especially with the rugby, you know, I was 35 when I retired and you have to – especially if you’ve been institutionalised like I was.

Going on to talk about his education at a single-sex school, James said: “I went to all-boys boarding schools, all the way through, and then an all-boys in a rugby team.

“So my worldview and my upbringing were relatively narrow. I didn’t go to university, so I didn’t get that cosmopolitan experience.

Speaking about leaving the rugby pitch behind, he continued: “You then have to find your way in the world.

“I have no discernible skills,” the sports star admitted. “I mean, the only two qualifications I do have are a barista course, which is useful.

“And I can drive and attend any 10-ton and above 360 excavator on any building site in the UK,” the former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star revealed.

According to Go Construct, a 360 excavator is “a heavy construction machine that consists of a boom, dipper, bucket and cab on a rotating platform.”

The machines are used for everything “from shifting materials to digging trenches and foundations, and are found on most medium to large-scale construction sites.”

“Basically, that’s a backup plan because if I get cancelled, most building sites will take you unless you’ve done something really wrong,” James quipped.

“Killed someone? Not a problem. Political issues? Not a problem. But that’s kind of all I’ve got to my name really.”
