The Arsenal legend, 53, said his gambling addiction is “on a fuse”. In August last year, after losing all the family savings again, he wrote on Instagram: “Please help me God. I need to stop gambling.”

Merson, who revealed that he has lost more than seven million pounds gambling, is living in rented accommodation and gets pocket money from his wife in a bid to stop him betting, he told the Happy Place podcast.

The father-of-eight said he dreaded the many times they had been to Disney and ended up at the wrong place because “the bar is opening or the baseball is starting”.

“You become very selfish and I am not that person,” he said.

The Soccer Saturday pundit, who beat drinking and drugs, said: “Gambling is the worst addiction I have had.

“Sometimes my addiction tells me ‘you can go back and win’. It scares me to death.”
