Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan, 55, has blasted Ofcom complainants after he sparked “outrage” by enjoying a sip of a pint of beer on the ITV show last week. The outspoken journalist hit back by branding GMB viewers who took issue with his early morning enjoyment of the alcoholic beverage, which he drank in celebration of pubs reopening, “halfwit killjoys”.
Addressing the backlash in his latest Event column for The Mail On Sunday, Piers said: “Eight people complained to Ofcom, the TV regulator, because I took one sip of a pint of beer at 6.42am on yesterday’s show, to mark pubs being able to reopen at the weekend after 104 days of lockdown.
“The complainants were apparently ‘outraged’ that I ‘broke health and safety rules’ by boozing at work.
“If I’d known it would annoy the halfwit killjoys that much, I’d have downed the whole pint in one,” he cheekily quipped.
Piers was gifted with a beer on the show at the time while news correspondent Jonathan Swain was reporting live from a pub to address coronavirus lockdown restrictions easing.

He said: “Where did that come from!?
“Swainy, I’m very jealous … I’ll be having a couple of pints on Saturday.”
Piers also warned viewers to be careful on “super Saturday”, which marked pubs reopening for the first time after lockdown
He explained: “We all want to have fun but please give the police a break, they need us to help them, we are all in this together.”
However, Piers’ co-host Susanna Reid seemed stunned to watch Piers indulge in the beer so early in the day.
She jokingly remarked: “It’s 6.30am in the morning kids.”
In spite of Susanna’s concerns, Piers took to Instagram to share some snaps of his celebratory drinking session during the show.
He wrote alongside the photos: “BOOM! First pint of Harvey’s in 4 months!

Piers and Susanna are currently on a break from GMB until September after fronting the programme throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
Susanna shared the selfie of the pair of them on Twitter to address their departure, and wrote: “Sadly, our last morning together for three weeks… @gmb.”
Piers was less than impressed with how he looked in the photo, writing dryly: “I look completely demented. It’s time for a break.”

The pair also shared news of their break on the show, with Piers saying: “Welcome to Good Morning Britain, it’s just gone six o’clock, welcome to the programme.
“We have two more days left and then you can all be glad to see the back of us. Not forever, we’ll be back in September.”
Susanna then warned: “Whenever you say we’re off and we’re leaving, people think ‘Woohoo is that forever?’”
Piers humorously added to the jibes: “‘Morgan quits! Good riddance! Viewers joy! And all the other things.’”
