Ranvir Singh: Jamie Laing breaks silence on ‘weird situation’ after dance-off backlash

Strictly: Jamie Laing reacts to dance off record

Strictly Come Dancing 2020 contestant Jamie Laing, 32, was saved by judges Craig Revel Horwood, 55, and Shirley Ballas, 60, last weekend after a dance-off with Ranvir Singh, 43, and her professional dance partner Giovanni Pernice, 30. Ahead of the final tonight, the reality star said it had been a “weird situation” following her departure.

Speaking to press including Express.co.uk, Jamie said: “When one of your buddies goes like Ranvir, they’re true friends, and so it’s a weird situation.

“You obviously don’t want to go home, but you also want somebody else to do a great dance but then you think, if they do a great dance, we’ll have to do a great dance, so it’s one of those things.

“It is tough and it is hard but it’s part of the show, that’s what happens, someone has to go.

“If it was us at any point, I would have said fair enough, that is what happens, that’s part of the show.”

Jamie went on to say the 2020 cast had become a “family”, adding it was “tricky” when somebody left the competition.

The Made In Chelsea star and his partner Karen Hauer will compete in the final this evening, despite previously being in the bottom two four times during the series.

After beating Ranvir and Giovanni in the dance-off, fans were divided about Shirley’s decision to save him.

At the time, one Twitter user wrote: “Ranvir… never once been in the dance-off, and Shirley boots her off.”

Another added: “I think Shirley was wrong.”

However, backing Jamie’s place in the final, a third commented: “So happy for you guys, most improved by far. Well deserved, can’t wait for next week.”

A fourth penned: “So deserved Jamie. So happy you made it to the final you have been a joy to watch and adore your enthusiasm and how much you are loving and embracing the wonderful world of Strictly.”

Discussing his dance-offs and being saved by Shirley, Jamie added: “I think some people now must think we’re bribing them, it’s got to that point.

“You know, it’s because we dance well.

“The tough thing is, people have their favourites and they have people they want to stay in the competition and people they want to not stay in the competition and that happens.

“I think probably with Karen and I, we have been one of those, some people want us to stay, some people don’t.

“So, I think it’s a tough one for the judges as well because they’re hurting not only someone who is in the competition but the people at home.”

Tonight, Jamie and Karen will compete for the Strictly Come Dancing Glitterball trophy against Oti Mabuse and Bill Bailey, Gorka Marquez and Maisie Smith and Janette Manrara and HRVY.

The duo will perform their Charleston and Couple’s Choice routines for a second time, as well as their Showdance.

According to Ladbrokes, Bill is currently the favourite contestant to win the show at odds 10/11.

Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight at 6pm on BBC One.
