Tesco's naughty new Christmas advert is set to Oops, I Did It Again

Tesco is about to play with your heart with a new Christmas advert set to Britney Spears’ hit Oops, I Did it Again – debuting during the Voice on ITV tonight.

The cheeky spot, voiced by Taskmaster star Asim Chaudhry, follows multiple characters as they ready themselves for the holidays.

We hear their inner monologues as they confess what they think might put them on the naughty list this year—from video call faux pas to loo roll hoarding.

Many expected companies to take a serious tone in their holiday adverts as the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect the country’s ability to gather and travel, with some scientists unsure if Christmas 2020 can be saved.

But Tesco decided to go the opposite route by trying to give us all a reason to smile instead.

Alessandra Bellini, the grocery giant’s Chief Customer Officer, said: ‘This year, customers were looking for something fun and uplifting that would help spread a little joy.

‘When we talked to friends, colleagues and customers about the concept, everyone instantly confessed to the naughty things they’ve done during 2020 with a wry smile.

‘It’s really relatable and we hope it resonates with people.’

Alessandra pointed to a 2000-person study undertaken by One Poll in which 78% of respondents apparently admitted to having a minor naughty slip-up during the year.

‘Tis officially the season for Christmas adverts, with John Lewis also releasing its hotly-anticipated annual submission yesterday.

They decided to take a more serious approach in their advert, which follows a chain reaction of small acts of kindness across the country.

Set to BBC Sound of 2020 winner Celeste’s haunting vocals and launched on National Kindness Day, the advert is part of a campaign hoping to raise £4 million for two UK based charities: FareShare, which helps those facing food poverty and Home-Start, which works with parents who need support.
