'The Pioneer Woman': Ree Drummond Gives a Classic Old-School Appetizer a Fun Upgrade

Ree Drummond gives the classic pigs in a blanket appetizer a fun pizza upgrade and it’s the perfect bite-size snack. The Pioneer Woman star shared the simple recipe that uses some store-bought shortcuts to save time.

Pigs in a blanket are typically mini cocktail weiners wrapped in crescent rolls, brushed with butter, and baked. Drummond took the classic appetizer and put her own pizza-flavored spin on it and it’s so easy to make.

Drummond demonstrated how to make her easy pizza pigs in a blanket recipe on an episode of The Pioneer Woman and started with a disclaimer. “I use just — not impressive at all, but very handy — pizza dough that comes in a roll, sold in the refrigerated section,” she admitted. “We all know what I’m talking about.”

After opening the can of pizza dough, she patted it into a 14-by-10-inch rectangle, then cut the dough into 32 rectangles. To assemble the appetizer, Drummond placed a spoonful of marinara sauce on each rectangle, then topped it with a piece of mozzarella, a sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes, and a slice of pepperoni. She placed a mini hot dog on the dough and rolled it up, then placed it seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

The Pioneer Woman star brushed each rolled-up treat with an egg wash and sprinkled parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning over the top “for a little crust.” She baked the appetizer in a 425 degree Fahrenheit oven for 15 minutes, then placed them on a platter and served the snack with a marinara dipping sauce. “It’s great for like a football game on TV,” she noted. “It’s great for anything.”

Drummond discovered an easy pizza rolls recipe

Drummond shared her easy pizza rolls recipe in a 2016 blog post on The Pioneer Woman website that explained how she made the “crazy rolls” with leftover cinnamon roll dough. “I was working with no recipe whatsoever, and had no plan,” Drummond wrote. “The idea came together in about 5 minutes. Kind of like my idea to start a blog 10 years ago.”

The Pioneer Woman star discovered that the dough wasn’t quite right for the pizza rolls and shared, “I determined that the next time I make these babies, I will use a true pizza dough with a little more chew to it. This dough was a little too soft to pass for pizza.”

Drummond rolled the dough into a rectangle, brushed olive oil on it, and sprinkled on salt. Then she put on the pizza toppings: marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, and jarred pesto.

The Food Network host rolled the dough and cut it into slices, then placed the rolls on a baking sheet and baked them in a 400 degree Fahrenheit oven for 15 to 18 minutes.
