Last week’s episode of The Mandalorian, “The Tragedy”, made it official: Boba Fett is back, baby. And while fans were thrilled to see Temuera Morrison return to the Star Wars universe as the infamous bounty hunter, they now have even more questions. A new video on the Star Wars Theory YouTube channel speculates as to how Boba Fett’s story could conclude in the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. One possibility: he might end up sitting on the throne of Mandalore as ruler.
There’s definitely some validity to this prediction. After Reddit user kinneroth translated the code which Boba Fett showed to Mando via hologram in “The Tragedy”, it is pretty much confirmed that Boba Fett’s story is true; his father, Jango Fett, was a Mandalorian foundling.
The Jango connection here is crucial. The video digs into Jango Fett’s backstory from the expanded universe material known as Star Wars Legends, which is not strictly canon but which has continued to influence the movies and TV shows in recent years (most notably with the introduction of Thrawn, a character who was originally created in a spinoff novel).
In a prequel comic book which serves as an origin story for Jango, we learn that Jango was taken in and raised by a Mandalorian general called Jaster Mereel after the death of his father, and eventually inherited his armor. As Mereel was the ruler of the Mandalorians prior to their civil war, this means that Boba Fett, the son of Jango Fett and rightful owner of Mereel’s armor, is in fact the heir apparent to Mandalore.
Given that we’re only just catching up with Boba Fett following his escape from the Sarlacc, it’s impossible to guess as to what his plans are, aside from assisting Mando in rescuing Grogu. The affinity he has towards his armor indicates that he stays true to the ways of the Mandalorians, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that he wants to end up being put in charge of their whole society.
And of course, Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) could also be considered the rightful ruler of Mandalore, and so it remains to be seen how this will play out in the show—fans may not even get an answer to this until the next season.
