Line of Duty stars Vicky McClure and Martin Compston have shared some of the “spot on” fan theories about the show – as well as the more ridiculous guesses at plot twists.

The hit BBC One police drama, written by Jed Mercurio, is set to end its sixth season on Sunday and viewers have been clamouring to find out who mysterious crime and corruption boss H is.

Vicky and Martin’s characters DI Kate Fleming and DI Steve Arnott have been on the hunt for bent coppers for years and are now tantalisingly close to discovering who the top corrupt officer is.

Talking on The Jonathan Ross Show, Martin said: “All these wild theories… some are pretty close!”

Fans will now be wondering which of their theories hit close to the mark, but the pair gave little away as Jonathan tried to go into more depth.

Asked about DCS Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin) tapping her pen four times, seemingly in Morse code for the letter “H”, Vicky said: “Hmm that’s very interesting, yeah. Very, very interesting…”

Jonathan asked them about a plausible-sounding clue that disgraced lawyer Jimmy Lakewell had said “look beyond the race claim to find H” – fans realised that if the letters for “race claim” were taken out of Paricia Carmichael’s name, it left just an H.

Martin said even he had nearly bought into the clever theory: “Do you know what I love about that one? It’s so spot on, but that line never got said… blew my mind. Jed said, ‘No, that line never happened.’”

At the sillier end of the scale, it was put to them that AC-12 gaffer Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) is a ghost only Kate and Steve can see.

Martin said: “I think as opposed to The Sixth Sense, that one’s no sense.”

On whether Ted could be Steve’s father he said: “It’s not Star Wars!”

The Line of Duty stars said even their own parents had been pumping them for inside information.

Vicky said: “Even my mum – I was in their garden, dad went inside – my mum was like, ‘Come on.’ I said, ‘No, no!’ I don’t want to ruin it for them. I’d tell her, she wouldn’t tell anyone, but it’s ruining it for her then.”

Martin added: “My dad went into a spiel of who (Jo Davidson’s relative) was, while he was saying it, I said who it was on the TV and he missed it. You have to pay attention.”
