5 times the Royals have set major fashion trends including Kates blazers and Meghans neutrals

Whilst the female members of the Royal Family are unique in their own right, they all share one thing in common – they're seriously inspiring style icons.

From Her Majesty The Queen’s colour-blocking to Meghan Markle’s outerwear, they've all set major fashion trends with their regal clothing choices.

Despite having to abide by strict wardrobe protocols, the Royals have debuted some super chic outfits during their time in the public eye that have influenced the way we shop today.

The Duchess of Cambridge, for example, loves a high street buy and often causes items to sell out completely – something experts call “the Kate effect”.

The firm’s dress code is put in place to ensure the Royals dress modestly at all times, but certain members of the family have pushed fashion boundaries and developed their own unique sense of style.

With so many fashion moments to pick from, we’ve rounded up the five best style trends sparked by the Royals – that could even inspire your next shopping trip…

Meghan Markle’s head-to-toe neutral looks

The Duchess of Sussex has set many trends during her time in the spotlight, but it’s her neutral outfits that many have swooned over.

After tying to knot with Prince Harry, Meghan turned up to most Royal engagements sporting light nude shades like blush, beige, cream and white – some say she carried on her newlywed moment by doing so.

This spilled over into her iconic collection of mid-length dresses, but in recent years she’s incorporated it into her newly found power-wardrobe which consists of camel coats, comfy knitwear and wide-leg trousers.

Kate Middleton’s blazers

When it comes to fashion staples, Kate Middleton’s go-to is a smart-but-cool blazer, which she usually pairs with jeans and trainers, or heels and a smart pair of trousers.

The Duchess has proved that blazers are incredibly versatile as she’s been seen sporting them to all manner of events both dressed up and down.

Her Majesty The Queen’s colour-blocking

If there’s one thing Queen Elizabeth II is famed for when it comes to clothing, it’s her vivid, colour-blocking outfits. In a 2016 documentary The Queen at 90, Countess Sophie of Wessex revealed the real reason behind her ever-colourful wardrobe.

Sophie said: “Don’t forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, ten, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen’s hat as she went past.”

“She needs to stand out for people to be able to say ‘I saw the Queen,’” she added.

Despite being donned by Her Majesty for as long as we can remember, the colour-blocking trend is having a major comeback in recent years, with many fashion lovers layering up clothing in similar shades to create a stylish tonal look.

Princess Diana’s shoulder pads

Princess Diana was famed for her impeccable style, but it’s her iconic shoulder pads that we remember the most.

Already a huge trend in the eighties, Diana incorporated them into her everyday looks; from power blazers to her tailored midi dresses.

Fast forward thirty years and shoulder pads are doing the rounds yet again, with high street retailers including them in tank tops, t-shirts and blazer dresses. This trend is super flattering for those with wider hips, as it creates an hourglass silhouette.

Kate and Meghan’s roll-neck jumpers

When it comes to autumn/winter fashion, both Kate and Meghan have been spotted wearing roll-neck jumpers as part of their everyday looks.

Meghan loves to pair hers with a chic, oversized coat, while Kate prefers a head-to-toe tailored look.

With Kate ditching her ‘mummy’ style and Megan living now in LA, we wonder what fashion trends they will set in the years to come?
