A BLOOD test for a potentially fatal condition in pregnant women will be rolled out across the NHS in England.
The same-day result should reassure thousands of mums-to-be each year and avoid hospital stays.
The placental growth factor testing to detect pre-eclampsia will be the first of its kind in the world. It is already being used in three quarters of maternity units in England.
Pre-eclampsia usually occurs later in pregnancy and is life-threatening for mums and their babies if untreated.
Early symptoms include high blood pressure and a certain protein in the mother’s urine.
Currently, 65,000 expectant mums a year are admitted to hospital for up to three days to be monitored for the condition.
The testing will be available across England within the next two years.
NHS clinical director for maternity and women's health Matthew Jolly said: “This new way of testing means we can rule out the condition in a much quicker and easier way.”
