Everything you need to know about the start of spring 2021

If you’re tired of winter and long for some sunshine and heat, there’s a reason to feel excited as spring is just around the corner.

It has been a long winter, being stuck inside and with plenty of snow, we are all cold and tired now.

Lockdown has made it harder and it has made us more impatient to see the back of the season.

But winter is nearly over, next week sees the start of March and the worst of the cold behind us.

As the weather gets warmer and the leaves return, it is the perfect time of year to lift people’s spirits.

There are two different dates that mark the start of spring – depending on whether you are going by the meteorological definition or the astrological one.

Many people consider March 1 as the start of Spring, which is the meteorological start of spring. The meteorological calendar is split into four seasons made up of three months each.

Therefore, spring is defined as the months March, April and May.

So if you are going by the meteorological definition, winter will end on February 28, and spring will last until May 31.

But if you're going by the astrological definition, spring starts with the Spring Equinox on March 20 in the northern hemisphere. This would make the end of winter March 19.

Seasons can be determined by an astronomical method which is used to divide the seasons into roughly three-month pieces.

This is all to do with where the Earth is in relation to the sun because of the planet’s tilt.

The seasons depend on where the sun is shining on the Earth, this is what causes the seasons to slightly vary from one year to the next.

So the start of Spring can be between March 19 – 21.
