We have all become very familiar with our pyjama collection throughout lockdown.
And whether you opt for a nightie, t-shirt and shorts or even a monogramed silk set, it is likely they are not washed enough.
So how often should you be washing your nightwear?
Fashion Marketing expert Harpa Gretarsdóttir, from Icelandic wool clothing brand Icewear, recommended pyjamas should be washed every three to four days.
However, for those that shower or bathe before bed, this can be extended to five to seven days maximum.
Harpa revealed that pyjamas are the only intimate clothing that we ‘wear multiple times as standard’ but nasty bacteria can accumulate in the bed if they are not washed frequently.

“This intimacy against our skin and parts of our bodies, for six to eight hours a night under bedding, makes them a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and other germs,” Harpa told Fabulous magazine.
And for people who are especially prone to sweating in their sleep, Harpa said daily washes are necessary.
The fashion expert revealed that infection and irritation can be caused by unwashed pyjamas as bacteria and ‘build-up’ can come into contact with wounds and other body parts.

Meanwhile Harpa explained how unwashed nightwear can also ‘contaminate’ other clothing in your wardrobe.
“Particulates and microbes in the grime on our pyjamas can often be transferred onto other items, such as underwear which allows various ‘nasties’ to contaminate articles of clothing we wear close to the skin,” she added.
Harpa recommended a 60C wash to kill bacteria or a detergent with disinfectant to kill 99.9% of germs.
Secondly people should tumble dry or air-dry straight after the wash has ended before storing in a dry drawer or wardrobe.
And to prevent the spread of bacteria, make sure to sync your pyjama washes with your partner or flatmate to stop cross-contamination.
