Irn-Bru announces old, unimproved 1901 recipe returning to shelves permanently

Irn-Bru lovers are set to hear the best news of 2021 because the old and unimproved recipe is making a comeback.

That’s right, in a super sweet announcement we’ve learnt that Irn-Bru 1901 – the old recipe – will return to shelves permanently as of this week.

From today, March 22, the unique 1901 recipe will be available to buy in the UK.

The recipe was outrageously popular with fans when it was first released and some people went to extreme lengths to buy the drink when stocks were low.

Now, fanatics can grab a 750ml glass bottle of the orange deliciousness year round – just like it was in 1901.

The authentic recipe came from a recipe book which was handwritten and stored in the Irn-Bru archives for over 100 years.

And, the flavour is largely changed due to some particular ingredients, reports the DailyRecord.

Quillaia is added for a frothy head, it’s sweetened only with sugar and contains no caffeine.

Adrian Troy, Marketing Director at Irn-Bru, says: “1901 proved super-popular with fans who really loved the recipe but were disappointed when stock ran dry.

“Now it’s back for good, so people can enjoy it year-round with the first bottles going on shelves today.”

Irn-Bru 1901 is a full sugar, sweetener-free addition to the core Irn-Bru range and will be available year-round.

The fizzy pop recipe was changed in 2018 to reduce its sugar content so that it didn’t fall foul of the “sugar tax”.

It was changed to include a mix of low-calorie sweeteners, including aspartame, and halves its sugar content.

The 1901 Irn-Bru will come in a fancy glass bottle with the Irn-Bru strongman on the front.

It’s a refreshing tonic beverage which we can’t wait to snap up!
