Mum decorating home finds note from the 1970s hidden under wallpaper

A woman was redecorating her home when she stumbled across a message from the past.

Cheryl England, from Southport, Merseyside, found scribbles on the wall that date back to the 1970s.

Decades ago, a handyman wrote the words: "June 1st 1975 Henry Threlfall Decorator Established 1876."

And accounts director Cheryl was surprised the marking lasted that long.

She told the ECHO: "When we decorate we always put our names on the wall under the wallpaper and the date we decorated but we never expect to see something like that, especially from that long ago."

The message isn't the only slice of history held in the house, with an old well being found under the work units in the kitchen prior to the kitchen being redone.

The mum-of-two added: "When we first moved in and were doing things, it had the old bell wire for the servants, they were still underneath the floorboards.

"There was also an old well. That was underneath the work units because when we had a new kitchen fitted we had new floors put down.

“When the guys came to taking the flooring up, they found the old well in the back of the kitchen."

The house on Windsor Road dates back to 1896.

With Cheryl owning the property since 2000, she continues to find pieces of history as she redecorates each room. Who knows what she’ll find next!
