DEAR DEIDRE: SINCE my daughter fell in with a bad crowd she has been staying out well beyond the hour we agreed, smoking weed and goodness knows what else.
She is 15 and I’m 49. She says that because she is “practically an adult”, she can do whatever she wants.

There is just no reasoning with her.
Last night she promised she would be home by 10pm but didn’t come in until 3am. This is the second time it’s happened in two weeks.
I’m worried sick because I know she walks home alone and I feel it’s a ticking time bomb before something happens to her.
We don’t sleep when she goes AWOL and yet she refuses to acknowledge she is doing anything wrong.

DEIDRE SAYS: Pick a time when there isn’t an argument brewing and have a chat.
Invite her to explain how things could be improved for her and see if there are any areas where you can compromise.
Really listen to her and give her time to feel heard.
This is when you can explain that whether she is an adult or not, walking home alone in the early hours is a dangerous habit to get into.
Explain that you are worried and want to work out a safe way for her to get home.
Hopefully she will start to open up a little and consider your feelings too.
I’m sending you my support pack Troubled Teens, which has more ideas.
