Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson has nothing but love for Princess Diana despite reports that they were at odds before Diana’s 1997 death.
The Duchess of York, 61, detailed her relationship with the late Princess of Wales in a new interview, explaining that they met when they were just teenagers and “were best friends from when she was 14 and I was 15.”
Ferguson told People that she gave Diana the nickname “Duch” and that they remained close until Diana died in a car crash in Paris at age 36.
“We promised each other we would always be together — there was never any daylight between us,” the “Her Heart for a Compass” author said.
“But everybody wanted [to see a feud] because we were so strong together. People want to break something so strong.”
Ferguson went on to credit Diana with teaching her “so much of public life,” as the People’s Princess had married into the British royal family years before her. (Both of their marriages, to Prince Andrew and Prince Charles, ended in divorce.)
“She was so brave,” Ferguson recalled. “We used to have the most incredible time together.”
She also said that Diana would be “very proud” of her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and their respective wives, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.
“And she would be, just like me, obsessed with her grandchildren,” Ferguson remarked. “Because that’s what she loved … this would be her haven, her heaven.
“If she were sitting with me right now, I know she would say, ‘I am so proud of both of my boys and the wonderful wives they have chosen,’” she added. “Because each has got her own voice.”
William tied the knot with Middleton, both now 39, in 2011, and they have three children: Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3.
Harry, 36, married Markle, 39, in 2018, and they have two children: Archie, 2, and Lilibet Diana, 1 month.
Ferguson previously praised Markle for the release of her children’s book, “The Bench.”
