The eight tools you need in your kitchen: Nutritionist reveals her ‘must-have’ appliances – and how they can save you time and money

A nutritionist has revealed there are just eight gadgets and tools that you need to invest in if you want to learn to love cooking and meal prepping, and buying them will save you time and money in the kitchen.

Steph Wearne, from Sydney, said while it’s easy to be swept up in thinking you need an appliance or tool for everything these days, in fact there are just a handful that are worth the investment.

‘If you are wanting to keep your kitchen minimal or are just starting out, then I have just a few kitchen essentials,’ Steph posted on her website. 

So what are they and how do they work?

1. Mandoline

Traditionally used to cut preparation time to a minimum when making gratins, slaws and French fries, mandolines are incredibly versatile and can slice, shred and grate any number of fruit and vegetables.  

‘I use mine daily, from making zucchini noodles (zoodles) to perfectly julienned carrots or simply just shaving cabbage super fine,’ Steph said. 

She said a mandoline is a worthwhile investment because not only does it make your food look more aesthetically pleasing, but it’s also a huge time saver.

The only thing the nutritionist said you need to look out for when you buy one is that you invest in a mandoline with a guard.

2. Slow Cooker

A slow cooker is a must in many foodies’ kitchens, and Steph is no exception.

The nutritionist said there is ‘nothing’ like opening the front door to a beautiful aroma emanating from the kitchen, and she loves using hers for this reason, plus the convenience factor.

‘I simply chuck in the ingredients of a morning, go about my day and end up with a beautiful home-cooked meal come dinner time,’ she said. 

And the good news is that slow cookers are often an economical investment, as you can buy the cheaper cuts of meat that have the time to tenderise when cooked in the slow cooker as opposed to the oven.  

Some of the nutritionist’s favourite dishes to make include curries, stews and casseroles.

There are a host of slow cooking cook books and recipes to choose from.

3. Good Quality Pans

While it might feel like an investment when you move in somewhere, you can’t underestimate the importance of several good-quality pans.

Once you have some decent pans, she added you just need to look after them well by hand-washing them and seasoning them whenever you use them. 

This will help any saucepans to last for the long term.

4. Food Storage Bags 

 If you’re into meal prepping in any way, then food storage bags are a must-have.

Steph will use them to store leftover food, keep her leafy greens fresh and store freezer meals when she needs to pack them away.

Since she bought food storage bags, Steph said she has much less food waste, and she uses far less plastic.

5. Food Covers

‘They easily stretch over bowls, cups and plates to keep food fresh,’ Steph said. 

The nutritionist said you never need to use something like cling wrap, but can instead keep leftover meals in bowls with a wrap over the top of it in the fridge.

Steph said she has them shaped so she can bake loaves and muffins as she often makes a lot of these, and she also has some for making chocolate dishes like her homemade peanut butter chocolate.

‘Having a thermos (pictured) is just so cosy and comforting and ready to warm you up on those cold day,’ Steph said

If you’re looking for a use for your moulds when you’re not baking, you can also pour leftover broths into them and pop them in the freezer for a later date.

The same applies to stock.

7. Thermos 

If you don’t have a thermos, Steph said you absolutely need a decent quality product, which can transport herbal teas, coffee, homemade soups and dahl when you’re on the move.

‘Having a thermos is just so cosy and comforting and ready to warm you up on those cold day,’ Steph said.

Steph said if you’re a parent of a young child, they’re even more important, as you can make them blended meals they will be able to eat.
