We’re used to seeing Una Healy look flawlessly glam, so it’s something of a relief to hear that, like the rest of us, even she struggles with one tricky make-up technique – creating the perfect winged eyeliner.

“When I was in the band we had to do our own make-up for quite a lot of gigs, so I got used to it over the years,” says The Saturdays star. “I even thought about being a make-up artist at one point.” Yet she admits that a winged eyeliner is something she has always found tricky.

Fortunately help was on hand from Una’s make-up artist, Lyndsey Harrison. In an Instagram Live video with them both doing their make-up on camera, she teaches the pop star her simple tips for mastering a flawless flick.

“I always put a little bit of make-up on every day and I was wearing less and less as lockdown went on, but I’ve missed doing the ‘going out’ make-up,” begins Una. “I’m ready to come back again with the full glam!”

Lyndsey’s first eyeliner tip is to start by marking out a guide line for the wing with a brown shadow and a flat brush. Stamp it on into a flick – this will help to get both sides matching. If you make a mistake, just buff it off with a brush.

They then both reach for a pot of gel liner and a thin brush – Una uses a classic, Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Liner, £20 here.

“Wish me luck now because this is my worst nightmare!” she jokes.

“Start in the centre of the lid to get a flow going,” advises Lyndsey. “Push your lashes down with the brush and keep it really fine. Where people go wrong is making the line thick from the inner corner – it just looks messy.

“Then follow the guide line, and don’t go back and forth too much. If you need to tidy up, use a cotton bud dunked in concealer or foundation.”

After mastering one eye, Una found doing the second eye trickier, especially when her excited 8-year-old daughter Aoife – who looks the spitting image of her mum – begins jumping on the bed.

During the chat Una, who also has a 5-year-old son Tadhg with ex-husband Ben Foden, also opens up about some of the highs and lows of lockdown, revealing they were meant to do this tutorial a few weeks ago but she couldn’t bring herself to be in front of a camera.

“I really struggled with the lockdown. It was just me and the kids which was lovely, but it was like Groundhog Day. There’s only so much you can get from talking to people through a screen. I missed the company so much.

“It has made me appreciate the simple pleasures more now though. I remember the excitement of getting my first Wagamama delivery through Deliveroo!”

She also answers a cheeky question from a fan asking why she was single, four months after splitting from boyfriend David Breen.

“Because I am!” she quips back. “And lockdown doesn’t help with meeting people either!”
