Working from home is currently recommended for all workers unless they cannot undertake their work from their homes. But many are concerned about their rights as they continue to undertake work from their homes. So what current legislation is in place to protect home workers?
Speaking from Downing Street on Thursday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock was asked whether the Government intends to legislate to make it easier for people to continue working from home if they wish to do so.
Mr Hancock highlighted the Government’s urging for people to work from home where possible.
He added coronavirus and the preference for working from home is something which “will stay with us a long time after the crisis”.
He said Zoom calls will continue and he is willing to speak to the Business Department to see if laws need to be implemented to undertake legislative changes to make it easier to do this.

Flexible working is a way of working which suits an employee’s needs such as flexible working hours and importantly during the COVID-19 lockdown: working from home.
All employees have the legal right to request flexible working, not just parents and carers.
This application for flexible working is known as making a statutory application.
Employees must have worked for the same employer for at least 26 weeks to be eligible.
Current legislation in place regarding working from home
Employers and employees are expected to be practical, flexible and sensitive when it comes to working from home throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
When working from home the following areas should be considered by both employers and employees:
- Health and safety
- Equipment and technology
- Terms and conditions of employment
- Insurance, mortgage or rent agreements.
