Liam Payne promises One Direction reunion will be sooner rather than later

One Direction fans should sit firmly on the edge of their seats as they wait for news to drop about a reunion – something which many fans have been waiting for since they initially went on hiatus six years ago.

The bandmates called time on the band just shy of a year after Zayn Malik announced his departure in March 2015, with the fellow members giving their last performance before the year's end.

Fans were hopeful that the band would reunite in time for their 10th anniversary in 2020, though it's unclear whether the group decided against it or if plans were halted due to Covid-19.

Regardless, the group didn't reunite – but it doesn't mean it's not on their mind.

Speaking to The Mirror, Liam Payne said: "I spoke to Louis about it and we were saying it has to be sooner rather than later", as he discussed the possibility of a reunion.

It seems The Wanted's reunion, which saw Liam attend Tom Parker's charity concert on Monday, got the wheels turning in Liam's mind.

Although there were multiple issues between both One Direction and The Wanted with countless Twitter spats between some members, Liam still showed in support – suggesting that differences might be put aside.

It comes after Simon Cowell previously told the publication that he thinks a reunion would happen.

He said: "If I could get into a room with them and just say, 'You know what, whether it's six months or something, I think you'd have such a great time', maybe I could persuade them."

Niall confessed earlier this year on The Jonathan Ross Show that he would only want to do it if everyone was "completely in".

He said he wouldn't want to "half force someone into doing it", but it's unclear whether he's discussing all five lads or just the four of them.

Many fans who are adamant of a reunion are sceptical about Zayn's participation after he left the band in 2015.

In the years that followed, most members have discussed the potential of a reunion, though they have kept the exact details of what they would plan very close to their chest.
