Steps have broken apart and reformed a few times over the years. The band first came together in 1997, until members parted ways in 2001, when Claire and H tried to make it as a duo. In 2011 the band had a 10-year reunion, and afterwards they reformed again in 2017 and 2019 – but who is in the line-up?

The current Steps line-up is exactly the same as it was in 1997, when they became hitmakers.

The members are: Lee Latchford-Evans, Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer, Ian ‘H’ Watkins.

Technically, this is not the original line-up, as the first five band members included H and Lisa, as well as Derek O’Brien, Maddy Chan and Mitch Stevens.

Derek, Maddy and Mitch left the band after a few recordings, and then Faye, Lee and Claire were subsequently hired from new auditions.

Their first single 5,6,7,8, came out in November 1997, and was a hit in the UK and all over the world, despite only peaking at number 14.

Steps were signed to Pete Waterman’s label, famed for his Stock Aitken Waterman songwriting days, and began releasing regular Top 10 singles.

In 2001, the group split after Claire and H left the band to form their own pop duo, H & Claire.

The duo only released one album, Another You, Another Me, which reached 58 in the charts, only for the duo to disband in 2003.

Claire and Faye later revealed that the split was really difficult for all of them.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast in 2017, Claire said: “When we split it was all a bit traumatic.”

Faye added: “Fractious. With a lot of bands who do so much heavy work you get burned out.

“In hindsight it was the right time to finish because we left a great legacy behind us to come back.”

The group’s first reunion came after they appeared on 2011 show Steps: The Reunion. During the show, they talked about the split and issues which arose during their time in the band.

They released albums until 2013 when the group went on hiatus, only to come back together again in 2017 to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

The band released a new album, Tears on the Dancefloor, and went on another reunion tour.

However, the band members also took part in their own projects alongside their work in the band, with Faye taking part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2018, Claire releasing a solo album in 2019, and H taking part in Dancing on Ice in 2020.

In 2020, they released another new album, What the Future Holds, which was accompanied by a tour announcement.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tour was not able to take place straight away, and will instead take place in 2021.

Along with the tour, Steps has also announced another new album, a Part Two of their What the Future Holds record.

The records include collaborations with stars Michelle Visage, with whom the band performed on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and Sophie Ellis Bextor.
