The Script guitarist Mark Sheehan has died at the age of 46 following a brief illness.

The musician's death was announced by the Irish rock band on Friday (April 14) as they took to Instagram with a statement.

Sharing a photo of Mark, the message read: "Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness.

They signed off the post by saying: "The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time."

Fans were devastated at the news of the Irish singer's passing and raced to the comments to pay tribute.

One heartbroken fan wrote: "‪I don’t know what to say other than this is breaking my heart in 100000 pieces. Many many many hugs and loves to familie and friends. Shaking while typing this. Rest in peace legend."

"Shocked and saddened. Mark was always so lovely and encouraging to us. Our thoughts are with all the Script family. RIP," added a second person.

Another shared: "I'm speechless right now. My thoughts are with you guys and his family and may he rest in peace."
