7 signs that The Apprentice is morphing into Love Island – from cast's reality TV stints to Dubai hols and secret romps

SCANDALOUS bedroom antics, racy bikini pics and wannabe reality TV stars flaunting their jet-setting holidays on Instagram – has The Apprentice ever reminded you of something?

As the hit BBC show prepares to return on Thursday, billionaire boss Lord Sugar has insisted it's still a serious business competition, but every year it undeniably seems more and more like Love Island.

Many of this year’s hopeful candidates have already been on reality TV before – one on as many as three different shows – and they aren't afraid to show off their incredible bikini bodies on Instagram.

Like the Love Island cast, many spend their holidays in celeb hotspot Dubai or hang out with famous pals at Wayne Lineker’s infamous Ocean Beach club in Ibiza.

To top it all off, over the past few years the business hopefuls – who just happen to get younger and more good looking every year – have had secret romps and even been told off for bed-hopping.

Here, we make our pitch for why The Apprentice truly is morphing into Love Island.

Reality TV veterans

Ten years ago, Lord Sugar claimed he banned people who just wanted to be on reality TV from entering The Apprentice.

And asked if he stood by that today, he said: “Yes, that is still the case.

“And if anybody has appeared somewhere before on a television programme, and it had been scrutinised in the auditioning process by the BBC, and if they’ve accepted it, it’s most probably because their appearance on whatever they’d been on was incidental or not of significance.”

And it just so happens that there are a few candidates who are used to being in the limelight, especially Navid Sole.

The 27-year-old is a celeb-obsessed millionaire’s son, who only ever wears Versace.

He’s previously appeared on ITV’s Judge Rinder, Channel 5 show When Rich Kids Go Skint and a rather embarrassing stint on BBC Three’s Eating With My Ex – on which his ‘ex-girlfriend’ Charlotte awkwardly told him: "I never saw you as a boyfriend."

Meanwhile, Kathryn Louise Burn was on Channel 4 show The Island With Bear Grylls in 2017 and American Amy Anzel featured on the first series of US dating show The Bachelor in 2002.

Bikini pictures and topless selfies

Every year the cast of The Apprentice seems to get younger and younger, and this series is the most baby-faced so far.

Just three of the 16 candidates are over the age of 35, and nine are in their 20s.

And they all love showing off their good looks on Instagram, with many posting bikini pictures and selfies.

Pyjamas designer Kathryn, 29, clearly has a passion for clothes, and is always posing in bikinis, and sexy, cut-out dresses.

Alex Short, 27, isn't shy of a topless selfie, while Akeem Bundu-Kamara showed off his six pack posing with a beer on the beach.

Dubai and Ibiza holidays

While they’re sunning themselves in their bikinis, this current lot of Apprentice stars opt for Love Island-style holiday destinations too.

Many ex-Islanders, including Laura Anderson and Georgia Harrison, were criticised for spending lots of time in Dubai during lockdown, claiming they were “working” there.

And it seems quite a few of this year’s cast of The Apprentice enjoy a work jolly out in the United Arab Emirates too.

Stephanie Affleck, 28, for instance posed in a Balmain swimsuit on the world-famous Jumeirah Beach.

Another favourite haunt of the Love Island cast is Wayne Lineker’s Ocean Beach club in Ibiza, and Alex Short showed off his toned six-pack with a pal there recently.

Celeb pals

You can always guarantee on the Love Island cast having at least five other reality TV star pals between them, ready to get them involved in all the PAs after the show wraps.

But, in recent years, the same can be said of The Apprentice cast.

Ex-rugby player Connor Gilsenan, 28, who is taking part in this year’s show, is friends with Thom Evans, and shared pictures of himself holidaying with Nicole Scherzinger’s boyfriend.

Meanwhile, in 2016, Jessica Cunningham had loads of reality TV mates, including Geordie Shore’s Sophie Kasaei and Vicky Pattison.

And Michaela Wain, who took part in the 2017 series, is the sister of Ex On The Beach and Love Island star Josh Ritchie.

It’s not just Love Island stars who get up to X-rated stuff between the sheets – especially as all The Apprentice candidates live in a huge London mansion together throughout the process.

In 2016, ex-stripper Jessica Cunningham got it on with Courtney Wood, and Grainne McCoy also got together with Paul Sullivan.

In fact, due to all the bed-hopping, the shows' production team had to tell the boys to stop visiting the girls' room as rules state they can't get up to mischief under the sheets.

A source told the Mirror at the time: “Both couples would suddenly disappear and there were several times they’d be found upstairs under the covers, kissing.

“Production team researchers had to go into one of the girls' rooms and tell the boys to move back to their own beds.”

Love is in the air

The show isn’t meant for romance, but many couples have found love in the boardroom throughout the more recent series – there were three from the 2017 series alone.

But only one has lasted.

Michaela Wain and Harrison Jones got together during that series, and are still together now.

They even have a three-year-old son, Grayson, together.

Returning to our screens

It’s clear that many of The Apprentice candidates over the years have wanted fame, as so many went on to appear on Celebrity Big Brother when the Channel 5 reality show was running.

Luisa Zissman, Andrew Brady, Karthik Nagesan and Jessica Cunningham all went into the infamous house after getting fired by Lord Sugar.

We have a sneaky suspicion some of this year’s lot will find a way of staying in the limelight too…
