Comedian and actor Ricky took to his Twitter page on Friday to give his 14.5 million followers a New Year’s treat; a brand new trailer for his hit Netflix series After Life. The final six episodes will be released later this month, but subscribers are already starting to tear up as they imagine how the comedy-drama will come to an end.

The third season will kick off with Ricky’s character Tony Johnson honouring his father’s wishes to spread his ashes.

Meanwhile, he is still grieving the loss of his wife Lisa (played by Kerry Godliman), and feeling conflicted over the way he acted before her death.

The trailer promises the return of Penelope Wilton, Ashley Jensen and Joe Wilkinson, and also teases a guest spot from Kenneth Collard as an irate pub landlord.

As well as the show’s signature style of dark comedy, After Life looks set to end on a bittersweet note as Tony struggles to overcome two devastating deaths in his family.

Once the teaser was released, a number of Ricky’s followers admitted they had already started tearing up at the new footage.

Twitter user Alan replied: “It’s only two minutes long and I’m in floods already.”

Another named Nett added: “Even the trailer has me in tears.”

And Nicky Feltham said: “Laughed and cried! How’d you do that in [two] minutes – incredible writing.”

Previous seasons have been critically acclaimed for Ricky’s sharply funny scripts and touching commentary on death and remorse.

In the new season, Tony still has regrets about his relationship with Lisa as he feels he may have been dismissive of her beliefs about life after death.

He starts to tear up as he admits: “I wish I hadn’t teased her about there not being an afterlife now.

“I think she wanted to believe in, like, heaven and angels and stuff. I hope she wasn’t scared.”

Thankfully, Penelope Wilton’s Anne, a widow whom Tony met in the graveyard in season one, is on hand once again to offer some advice.

In the trailer, she tells him: “There are angels. They don’t have wings and live in clouds.

“They wear nurses uniforms and work hard to pay the rent on their houses.

“If you want to be an angel you’ve got to do it when you’re alive. Be good, do good things.”

Her speech clearly struck a chord with fans of the series, and her words were also accompanied by clips from Tony’s short-lived life with Lisa.

Sadly, After Life will be coming to an end after series three, but viewers will be thrilled to see its return after waiting since 2020 for more episodes.

After Life season three will be released Friday, January 14 on Netflix.
