Ant and Dec admit they considered going solo during Ant's break from showbiz

Ant and Dec have said they considered breaking up their professional partnership and going solo following Ant’s 2018 arrest for drink driving.

Speaking on The One Show today, the Britain’s Got Talent presenters recalled taking a break from working together following the incident.

Declan Donnelly, 44, admitted: ‘Oh, absolutely [there was a moment where we thought we might have to go solo].’

‘We both did,’ added Ant McPartlin, also 44.

‘We both were very unsure what tomorrow would bring,’ continued Dec. ‘I didn’t know if Ant was going to come back from his period away and go, do you know what, I want to go and be a pig farmer in Wales.’

Ant then said: ‘When you do come back together, and we have in the last year, you enjoy it more. I don’t think we ever took it for granted, but there are points where you just go to work. That enforced break made us think about the importance of things. We realised we just love being together.’

He also said: ‘When you take time out you have a chance to look at your life, look at what’s making you happy, look at what you can change and I was going through quite a lot at the time.

‘It was the best decision to take time out of work because that wasn’t the most important thing, I just had to get myself right and I did and we spoke a lot as friends, forgetting the career, and we decided that the best thing to do would be to get happy, get well and come back when I was better and that’s what we did.’

Elsewhere in the episode, Ant was reunited via video link with Lyn Spencer, his old drama teacher who encouraged him to audition for his first TV role as a kid: Byker Grove.

‘In your life when you’re younger you have people who really instill confidence in you,’ said Ant. ‘She was somebody who said to me, “you’re good at this, you should follow this.”‘

‘The day before the audition, he wanted to pull out,’ remembered Lyn. ‘He was too nervous. Bless him, he was only 12, but he still had to go. I had to use all of my powers of persuasion.’

As well as current shows like I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Britain’s Got Talent, Ant and Dec’s throwback TV credits include Pop Idol and CD: UK.

The One Show returns to BBC One tomorrow at 7pm.
