‘Charlie’s Angels’ Trailer: Elizabeth Banks Tries to Reboot the Franchise

Can a remnant from the Jiggle TV era be reinvented as a female-empowerment action flick for the Time’s Up generation? That’s the task undertaken by Elizabeth Banks, and judging by the first trailer for her take on “Charlie’s Angels,” she just might pull it off.

Banks, who co-wrote and directed the film, plays Bosley, a boss at the Townsend Agency. She’s one of the film’s multiple Bosleys, including Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou. The company’s mission has expanded from private investigations to international intelligence.

The titular trio of agents (Kirsten Stewart, Naomi Scott from “Aladdin” and Ella Balinska) are assigned to prevent a new technology from being weaponized. Along the way they meet a hunky nerd played by Noah Centineo, the poster boy from Netflix teen rom-coms like “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “The Perfect Date.”

The Angels franchise has been rebooted before, most notably in a hit 2000 movie starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. While the latest version includes the obligatory gun battles, explosions and flashy costumes, the trailer sets itself apart by depicting its female characters as nobody’s sex objects.

“Charlie’s Angels” lands in theaters Nov. 15.
