COLEEN and Wayne Rooney’s neighbours have been successful in blocking plans to turn land near their £20million mega-mansion into a traveller site.
Approximately 1,000 locals petitioned against the proposals to convert farmland in Cheshire, which is also close to former Man Utd defender Wes Brown and his Real Housewives of Cheshire star wife Leanne.
Michael Maloney, who describes himself as a “member of the Irish travelling community” wanted to build three sites in Cheshire, near where many of the north’s rich and famous live.
The sites would be close to the Rooney’s sprawling dream home, dubbed the "Morrison's mansion”, after it was mocked for looking like a supermarket.
But Cheshire East Council blocked the plans after it said it had received “approximately 1,000 letters of objection”, with concerns about "no Covid-19 provisions”, “fear of increased crime”, and a “hazard to the local community”.
The council obtained a court injunction to stop any building work after it was found out "the site was occupied by increasing numbers of people and caravans, with the site eventually comprising 13 touring caravans, accommodating between 40 and 50 people”, according to the planning officer’s report.
Maloney claimed in the design and access statement that he had "an immediate requirement for residential accommodation” after his previous home in Bishop’s Stortford, Essex, was set on fire in an arson attack in April.
According to reports at the time, it was the result of a feud between the Maloneys and another family, the Maughans, over Maloney’s construction and paving business, which resulted in his £400,000 estate, Hill Top Yard, being burnt down.
Maloney has previous with planning battles at his former home.
In 2015, his application to change the yard into a traveller site was refused and dismissed at appeal.
But two years later, he was allowed to keep 10 lampposts claiming they were needed for his children’s safety at night despite 150 objections from neighbours.
The Rooneys are building a £20m mansion, and the proposed mega-home has a luxury underground pool and gym complex, cinema room, 40 acres of grounds, stables and a full-size football pitch.
