Athlete-turned-actor Terry Crews is the latest to have his name thrown around as a possibility for the upcoming Disney live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Crews is a busy man, but it sounds like he’s on board. Here’s what you need to know about him and what else he has on the horizon.
Here’s how you know Terry Crews
Crews has been acting for 20 years. After roles in comedies such as Malibu’s Most Wanted, White Chicks, and The Longest Yard, he was cast on Chris Rocks’ semi-autobiographical sitcom Everybody Hates Chris. Crews also made his way into franchise flicks such as Scary Movie 5 and all three of The Expendables films.
Since 2013, Crews has starred as Sergeant (now Lieutenant) Terry Jeffords on the Fox-turned-NBC sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He’s also the current host of America’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent: The Champions. In 2018, he appeared in two of the most popular films: Sorry to Bother You and Deadpool 2.
He recently expressed his interest in the role of King Triton
If you know anything about Crews, you know that he’s very active on social media. He uses it for more serious matters, such as telling the story of his sexual assault at the hands of a Hollywood agent, during the beginnings of the Me Too movement. But he also likes to make people smile, and his latest posts certainly have done that.
Crews took to Twitter to champion himself for the role of King Triton, Ariel’s father, in The Little Mermaid, using the hashtags #ArielsGotTerry and #AmericasGotTerry (a play on his hosting gig on America’s Got Talent). He also included a photo of himself replacing the animated Triton. Crews followed this up by commenting on how his workout routine makes him perfect for the part.
Crews would be playing the father of this young actress
The actors’ tweet comes in the wake of the announcement that actress Halle Bailey will be playing Ariel. Bailey is best known as one-half of the sister R&B duo Chloe x Halle and as one of the young stars of the Freeform series Grown-ish.
Not everyone was a fan of Bailey’s casting. Some took to Twitter to share photos of their favorite white, blond/red-headed actresses who they feel are better suited to play a cartoon mermaid. Still, most of Twitter, including many of the most famous actors and musicians working today, were quick to support the choice and congratulate Bailey.
These are the other actors who have been cast
Thus far, there has been no news as to who will be playing King Triton. The role that Crews is gunning for is an important one but doesn’t have quite as much screen time as the others that have been announced. So he still has time to get his Twitter campaign off the ground.
Right now, it appears as though Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) will be voicing the Scuttle the Seagull and Jacob Tremblay (Room) is set to provide vocals for Flounder the Fish (both CGI characters). Melissa McCarthy is said to be portraying Ursula the Seawitch, though there are many out there who believe singer Lizzo should get the part.
What else does Crews have on the horizon?
Even if he doesn’t get the part, Crews has plenty of other projects on his plate. He’s still on the aforementioned series. And he recently said that he spoke to the Wayans brothers and they’re all on board for a sequel to White Chicks. “I am staying in shape so I could do White Chicks 2,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
Oh, and there’s another animated character that many fans would like to see him bring to life. Many are lobbying for Crews to portray He-Man in an upcoming adaptation, but there’s no reason to believe that he’s attached.
