Fans of Dark saw the final instalment of the trilogy TV series landing on Netflix today (June 27). The date was no coincidence, marking the apocalypse in the show. Many viewers have binged through the eight new episodes but have questions about the ending. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know.
What happened at the end of Dark?
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Dark season 3
The Origin World
Claudia Tiedemann (played by Lisa Kreuzer) discovered there was a third world outside of the initial two, which she called “the Origin World”.
The Origin World was essentially the real world, which had created the other two worlds belonging to Adam (Dietrich Hollinderbaumer) and Eve (Barbara Nüsse).
Over time, Claudia realised the knot between Adam and Eve’s world could never be broken from inside and would remain a never-ending cycle. The cycle could only end in the Origin World.
She also noted her daughter Regina Tiedemann (Deborah Kaufmann) died in both Adam and Eve’s world each time, which led her to believe something was amiss.
As the cycle continued endlessly, Claudia started to manipulate small things each time and eventually managed to bring Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) and a version of Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari) together.

Tannhaus accidentally created the knot
Claudia revealed the two worlds were accidentally created by scientist and clock shop owner H.G. Tannhaus (Christian Steyer) when he was building a time travelling machine.
Tannhaus was building a time travel machine after his son, daughter-in-law and grandchild died in a tragic car accident after their car veered off a bridge in the middle of a storm.
The scientist lost everything he had and started working on the time machine, so he could go back and save his family from death.
While it’s not clear if Tannhaus realised whether he was successful or not, he inadvertently created two other intertwined worlds which seemed to be in another dimension.
Martha and Jonas destroyed the knot
During the last cycle of the knot, Claudia revealed there was a short moment where time stopped and allowed time travel to the Origin World.
Jonas and Martha travelled through time to Winden in the Origin world to the 21st June 1986.
They had to stop Tannhaus’ family from being killed, which would mean the scientist would never create his time machine in the first place.
In turn, Adam and Eve’s worlds would no longer exist and the knot would be broken forever.
Martha and Jones managed to succeed, telling Tannhaus’ son the bridge was shut and how he should return to his father’s house.

Dark season 3 cast: Who is in the cast of Dark? [EXPLAINER]
When the teens were travelling to the Origin World, they seemed to end up in a trippy vortex which appeared to be a nod to Eighties sci-fi movies.
For a moment, the pair lost each other in the time-space continuum. However, something strange happened: Martha saw a young version of Jonas in the portal and Jonas spotted a young incarnation of Martha.
After this strange moment, Martha and Jonas found each other in the vortex and eventually made it to their destination in the Origin World.
Shortly after stopping Tannhaus’ family from dying, they both revealed their respective vision in the portal, perhaps suggesting they were inexplicably intertwined.
Although it was unclear whether their visions were from the Origin World, there seemed to be a hint Martha and Jonas could be alive and versions of them existed somewhere.
Adam and Eve’s worlds were destroyed
Following Jonas and Martha’s conversation about the vortex, the pair disintegrated – a sign they had undone the knot.
Once the knot was untied, it meant they no longer existed. But they weren’t the only characters to be wiped out – all of the characters in Adam and Eve’s world died.
Everyone in these two worlds started to evaporate into nothing as the events in these worlds were finally ended.

Who died at the end of Dark?
The final scene featured a group of characters sat around a dining table in contemporary Winden.
Katharina Nielsen (Jordis Triebel), Regina, Hannah Kahnwald (Maja Schöne), Peter Doppler (Stephan Kampwirth), Torben Wöller (Leopold Hornung) and Benni Wöller (Anton Rubtsov) were all at dinner.
This group seemed to be the only ones who had survived and everyone in Adam and Eve’s worlds were dead. They may well have survived because they were not created as a result of time travel.
However, it seems a version of Claudia must have survived in order to give birth to Regina in the Origin World.
Going by this logic, Katharina’s mother, Egon Tiedemann (Christian Pätzold), Doris Tiedemann (Luise Heyer), Helge Doppler (Hermann Beyer) and Greta Doppler (Cordelia Wege) are still alive or at least a version existed in the Origin World.
Tannhaus, meanwhile, is alive in the Origin world as well.
Interestingly, Hannah was revealed to be pregnant with police officer Wöller’s baby and said she was planning to name the child Jonas after catching a glimpse of a yellow raincoat.
This means, a version of Jonas could be alive in the Origin World.
Although the dinner party didn’t feature many characters, there’s nothing to suggest Magnus Nielsen (Moritz Jahn), Martha and Mikkel Nielsen (Daan Lennard Liebrenz) couldn’t be alive. They may simply not have been invited.
Something else worth considering is Bartosz Tiedemann (Paul Lux) could still be alive in the Origin World because there’s nothing to suggest his mother didn’t give birth to him.
Either way, it’s clear the creators have left this open to interpretation.
