EastEnders: Jean Slater records message about her cancer
Jean (played by Gillian Wright) is convinced her cancer has returned after finding a lump on her breast during the Christmas Day instalment of EastEnders. Stacey Slater’s (Lacey Turner) mother was set to get tests when she made a doctor’s appointment earlier this week but she decided against it as her fears told her the diagnosis wasn’t going to be great. As she celebrated her birthday during Thursday’s edition of the BBC soap, the matriarch reflected on her life and decided she wanted to spend the rest of the time she had left exploring the world, sparking concerns the beloved character is making an exit.
After getting her eyebrows done by Sheree Trueman (Suzette Llewellyn) and thinking of how her late boyfriend Daniel Cook (Adrian Edmondson) approached his cancer diagnosis, the mother-of-two sat down to record a message for her family.
Sat at her dresser, Jean began: “The cancer is back. I know. I don’t need tests and results to tell me – I can feel it.
“So, I’m giving myself the best birthday present ever. I don’t want you to get cross but I’ve decided not to have treatment this time.
“Don’t get angry with me. I’ve thought about it and I can’t go through all that all again. I don’t want to.
“I know treatment is right for some people but not for me and not this time,” the matriarch continued.

Stacey’s mother added: “So, I’m taking a leaf out of Daniel’s book, I just want to knock back the painkillers and take each day as it comes.
“Doing what I want to do my way. After all, all we really have is today and I want all my today’s to be beautiful.
“Even if that means having a mug of tea and watching the rain, again,” she told her family before telling them she was leaving Walford.
“I don’t know where I will be when you get this or how I will be but now you know. It’s not up for discussion.”
I don’t know where I will be
The matriarch concluded her message by saying: “I’m not off my medication, I’m not having an episode, I just want to spend my last few months the way I choose.
“I love you all so very, very, very much. I know you love me so just let me do this, okay?” she added before stopping the recording.
It’s not been officially announced by soap bosses whether Jean is in fact leaving the show or whether this is another twist in her ongoing storyline.
Having not allowed herself to get tests to determine if she has cancer, the mother-of-two might be letting her fear get the better of her.

Before Jean was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year, she left Walford as she didn’t want to face the reality of what was happening to her.
Luckily, Stacey managed to talk her around and the matriarch got her results which led to her starting treatment.
The diagnosis saw her estranged son Sean Slater (Robert Kazinsky) return to the Square and overcome with emotion at the thought of losing his mother, the former character took her to a remote farm.
It was here where the two had a heart-to-heart and put aside their differences from the past as well as the matriarch telling her son she was going to fight her cancer.
However, with Sean no longer around and having also lost Daniel to cancer, has Jean finally had enough?
Stacey would be devastated if her mother was to leave Walford, having recently returned to the Square after almost a year apart.
If the matriarch does make a sharp exit, it’s likely her daughter will be desperate to track her down and get her to a doctor.
Will Stacey be able to convince her mother not to give up and to get tests to determine whether she does have cancer?
EastEnders continues Friday at 8:40pm on BBC One.
