Emmerdale fans are desperate to know who Meena Jutla (played by Paige Sandra) will kill next and when she is going to be found out. In the meantime, it seems the dust will settle around Leanna Cavanagh’s (Mimi Slinger) death and Meena might try to go down a different route when it comes to scheming before she claims her next victim. In Thursday night’s double bill, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) laid his daughter to rest and those watching at home saw Meena at every important point from before the service, to during, even though the doctor had banned the village from attending to orchestrating and then watching her boyfriend David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) be punched. Several comments that were exchanged suggests Meena is targeting Liam and giving his grieving status, could he mistake her kindness for romance?
At the start of the day, Meena arrived at Liam’s house and let herself in.
Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) said: “Meena, now is not a great time,” and the nurse replied: “Sorry. Liam i just wanted to drop these [flowers] off from all of us at the surgery. How are you?”
“I guess I’m as you find me,” he said and Meena asked: “What can I do to help?”
But her request was drowned out by the sound of Leyla’s phone notifications which annoyed Liam so much he ordered her not to attend the funeral.
They made up off-camera and as Leyla walked into the church, she saw Meena and exclaimed: “What are you doing here? You can’t be here!”
“I thought you weren’t coming!” Meena explained and turned to the grieving father and said: “I’m so sorry Liam, i didn’t want you to go through this on your own.”
“Well he’s not, you’ve got to go,” Leyla demanded and Meena replied: “Of course, I really am so sorry Liam.”
“It’s fine. Stay,” he said. “Really please stay.”
After the service, the three of them left the church and Jacob Gallagher (Joe Warren Plant) was furious Meena had been able to attend: “How come you got to go in there and I’m stuck out here?”
“Meena was welcome, you weren’t that’s why,” Liam said and Meena added: “I thought Liam would be on his own after he banned Leyla.”
“He changed his mind,” Leyla interjected and Meena continued: “I didn’t know he had and I couldn’t have him face all that alone.”
Liam left for a moment of reflection and Leyla took this opportunity to tell her son he could go inside the church and say his goodbye.
But Meena used this as leverage to drive an even bigger wedge between Liam and Leyla.
ITV viewers saw Meena tell the doctor: “Sorry to interrupt, but Liam, I’m sure you’d want to know,” and he stormed back to the church and confronted Jacob.
And when Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin) asked the undertakers to prepare the coffin for burial, Meena went to walk behind Liam but David stepped in: “Hey, let Leyla look after him now, give him some privacy yes?”
Smiling but secretly feeling annoying, Meena replied: “You’re right.”
Later on, a few residents gathered in the Woolpack for a drink and Meena and David were sitting by the fireplace behind Liam and Leyla who were at the bar.
“This is so awkward, do you think we should go over?” Meena wondered and her boyfriend said: “It’s a bit tense, best not.”
Liam then lambasted Leyla for telling Jacob he could say goodbye to Leanna and went to storm out, but said: “Meena, I just want to thank you for your support earlier.”
“There’s no need! I just did what anyone else would’ve,” She replied smiling sweetly.
It is clear Meena is stirring the pot between Liam and Leyla, causing him to lash out and his wife and push her away during his time of need.
But is this all part of a bigger plan for Liam to realise he can only rely on Meena?
And during one of his drunken moments, will he lunge toward her for a kiss?
This could be Meena’s way of tearing Liam and Leyla’s relationship apart as Leyla gets closer to David – which Meena does not like.
Emmerdale airs weekday evenings at 7pm on ITV.
