Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is being turned into a movie and fans have finally been given a first look at the upcoming film as a brand new trailer dropped on Sunday.
The movie is based on documentary, Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, that first aired on BBC Three back in 2011 and follows schoolboy Jamie as he dreams of wearing a dress to his dance and takes on prejudice and bullies in his fight to do so.
It inspired the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie that first hit the stage in 2017 and now Jamie’s story is being brought to life on the big screen.
The two-minute long teaser clip sees Jamie, played by Max Harwood, sat in a classroom where he reveals his hopes of becoming a performer to his teacher.
But, his hopes of becoming a drag queen aren’t plain sailing, with the trailer touching on Jamie’s strained relationship with his dad and his determination to follow his heart, despite both the school and other kids getting in his way.
‘You are the bravest person I know, you’re like Beyonce,’ his school friend tells him, as other scenes reveal Jamie meeting with drag queen Loco Channelle (played by Richard E. Grant) and him bursting into big musical numbers.
Fans were all for the trailer and flocked to Twitter to share their excitement, as the official Twitter account for Everybody’s Talking About Jamie posted the teaser.
Some fans were seen likening it to box office hit Elton John biopic Rocketman, released last year, while others dubbed it the movie ‘we all need right now’ in 2020.
‘Finally, something to be excited about,’ tweeted on fan, while another said: ‘Okay I’m literally so excited this was one of my favourite musicals this year and I can’t wait to see it!!!’
‘This trailer feels like Love Simon (One Of my favourite movies of all time) & the musical sequences are groundbreaking & phenomenal just like Rocketman. With RuPaul’s Drag Race being a global phenomenon. This is the movie we need right now with a powerful message! I so can’t wait,’ commented another excited fan.
One more agreed: ‘I’ve seen the musical 3 times and cried every time. I have big tears in my eyes now just watching the trailer. Such an inspiring film. A film for now in these dark days.’
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie also stars Sharon Horgan, Sarah Lancashire and Ralph Ineson.
Former Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati will also feature in the film, after starring in the musical’s UK tour as Ray, to reprise her role.
The movie has been adapted from the musical and will feature the show’s original songs penned by The Feeling’s Dan Gillespie Sells.
It was previously scheduled for release later this month on October 23, but has now been pushed back until February next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is set for release on February 26, 2021.
