Hellbound is another South Korean hit for Netflix, focusing on the rise of demon killings around the world. Premiering last week on the streaming platform, viewers have raced through the first season and are now eager for a sequel. However, Netflix has been quite on the show since the premiere.
Will there be a second season of Hellbound?
For fans that are keen to scratch the itch Squid Game left, Hellbound is another South Korean series that is brutally violent and expansive.
Created by Yeon Sang-ho, the director of the hit film Train to Busan, the series invited viewers into a massive world of demon killing, cult worship, and detective drama.
Spread across six episodes, the show wastes no time in getting the plot going, throwing the characters and audience into the deep end.
Much like the aforementioned Squid Game, the show has raced to the number one spot on Netflix, inviting the possibility of a continuation.
While there certainly is demand for season two, Netflix has not announced a second season.
However, the finale of season one left the door open for more, tantalising viewers with more horror to come.
With Netflix yet to renew the show, it is hard to guess what the second season could be about.
However, there is enough evidence in season one to be able to piece together the clues.
What would Hellbound season two be about?
In Hellbound, viewers are invited into a world where demons are appearing all over the world.
When they arrive, they kill a specific person before returning to the depths of the abyss.
In response to these events, or potentially related to them, is the rise of a new cult known as The New Truth.
The followers of the fanatical religious cult believe that the demons are appearing as part of some twisted divine justice.
The first season ended with the hope that those that have been killed by the demons could return.
This is the catalyst needed to end the nightmare once and for all, meaning season two could finally start to see humanity fight back against the underworld itself.
Another major reveal was that the demons were not only after sinners, something The New Truth preached to its followers.
It also throws into doubt what the monsters actually are and where they are coming from.
Perhaps they are not demons at all, and the place humanity is being sent isn’t the underworld, but somewhere entirely different.
A second season remains completely open for Yeon to explore, though fans are hoping for news on season two soon.
If it is announced in the coming weeks or months, a release date of late 2022 seems most likely.
This has become a series where nothing is ever as it seems and if season two happens, it will likely lead to scenarios fans could never have expected.
Hellbound is available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
