Hollyoaks star confirms 'monumental effects' as John Paul's alcoholism revealed

John Paul McQueen’s (James Sutton) alcohol addiction will be revealed in upcoming Hollyoaks scenes, with ‘monumental effects’ set to unfold.

The deputy head teacher has been struggling to come to terms with the minibus crash, which saw student Freya left with life-changing injuries.

He turns to alcohol once more, as he starts to drink on school property, wracked with guilt over his role in the crash.

Sally St Claire (Annie Wallace), meanwhile, has no idea about the extent of John Paul’s struggles or his addiction.

‘John Paul is crumbling around her,’ actress Annie Wallace told Metro.co.uk. Sally is still partially oblivious to it all.

‘She thinks he’s just having a bit of a hard time, but she’s not yet aware of how deep this is going or where it might take John Paul.’

Where it might take John Paul is certainly an interesting question, and one that we can shed some light on, as, amid organising Freya’s fundraiser, things take quite an interesting turn for the deputy head, as he drunkenly storms the stage and takes the microphone from Freya, ready to make a huge revelation.

‘Sally is excited about [the fundraiser] because there’s lots of people, lots of fun!’, continued Annie.

‘She’s there when all of this is happening, and John Paul coming up in front of the mic is very unexpected, especially considering the person who was meant to speak was young Freya herself, so he comes across rather rude, and Sally’s not liking that!’

The question is: just what is John Paul planning on announcing?

‘He says something, though maybe not in the way you think!,’ exclaimed Annie. ‘Put it this way, there is a PA system, and a radio microphone on the stage.’

Annie described the scenes in question as a ‘major peak’ to John Paul’s storyline, and revealed that this is actually the ‘start’ Sally’s involvement in the tale.

‘For the first time, she’s made aware of how far John Paul has fallen,’ said the actress.

She added: ‘It’s a really good moment, and it is going to have absolutely monumental effects on both Sally and John Paul, and the family as a whole. It’s going to effect the school. John Paul’s future, maybe?

It’s a massive turning point, and I can tell you right now that it’s not the conclusion. If anything, it’s the start! Once people are made aware of just how far someone has gone, it’s then how do you get someone back from that?

‘It’s not something that has a cure, it is longterm and that’s where we are going with it.

Annie was quick to remind us that John Paul started drinking when George Kiss (Callum Kerr) was murdered, reiterating that Sally will be ‘carrying her own guilt and stress’ given that she delivered the final blow that killed the abusive policeman.

‘It’s quite a mountain to climb, and we have been filming some rather good stuff, which actually goes way past next week, that you’re going to love!,’ concluded the soap star.
