The Larkins is one of the most highly anticipated programmes’s on the ITV autumn schedule and this evening, the first episode will air. The Chase host Bradley Walsh is leading the all-star cast as Pop Larkin and Joanna Scanlon is taking on the role of his wife, Ma Larkin. It will be the perfect Sunday night viewing, as the series is set to broadcast in the same slot for weeks to come. Here is everything you need to know about how many episodes there are in season one.

How many episodes are in The Larkins on ITV?

One of the most pivotal slots in the Sunday evening schedule on ITV is 8pm until 9pm and this is when The Larkins will air.

It is hoped thousands, if not millions of viewers will tune in as it goes up against The Mating Game on BBC One and Antiques Roadshow on BBC Two.

As is usual with dramas that air in this time slot, it won’t be a one-off episode as the series plays out over the next month and a half.

This is because there are six episodes in season one, with each episode exploring the life and times of the iconic 50s family.

Currently, it is not known if there will be a season two but if the ratings are a success, more instalments may feature in future seasons.

The six-episode series will conclude on November 14, 2021, but it has already been announced fans will be getting a special instalment later in the year.

Producers have already filmed a Christmas special airing in December whether or not season two is given the green light.

It has been teased this isn’t what viewers would expect from a festive instalment of the show as actress Joanne said: “I will not say a word specifically but there are lots of twists and turns in it.

“It genuinely does remind you what Christmas is about – what it really is about – as well as giving you, of course, I hope a lot of laughs and pleasure on the way.”

Bradley added: “It’s got a twist, to say the least of it.”

The timing couldn’t be better

Getting the show up to six episodes has been quite the feat for the creative team as they have had to adhere to new health and safety regulations enforced as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Viewers won’t see any social distancing between the cast members as everyone was tested before filming could begin.

Speaking about the reaction the show would get, Bradley reference the multiple lockdowns the UK had been through, stating: “The original Darling Buds was such a success because the country was in the grip of a recession in the 90s when it was shown.

“After the 18 months we’ve all been through, everyone’s going to be falling in love with the Larkins all over again.

“This is a world rooted in family and community and giving and love. The timing couldn’t be better,” he told The Mirror.

What happens in episode one of The Larkins?

With the premiere airing tonight, bosses have worked hard to ensure the first episode of the series gets viewers wanting more.

The opening instalment will begin with Pop and Ma getting themselves ready for the May Day Fair taking place in the village.

As newcomers also settle in, the Larkins’ daughter, Mariette Larkin (Sabrina Bartlett) will leave her parents shaken with her news.

If things couldn’t get any more complicated for the family, the taxman arrives and demands money from the beloved clan.

However, the taxman is in fact Cedric ‘Charley’ Charlton (Tok Stephen) who soon realises he is harbouring feelings for Mariette.

Charley isn’t the only one in the village pining after the Larkins’ daughter as he discovers he has a love rival in Tom Fisher (Stephen Hagan).

As the two men fight for Mariette’s affections it seems her news for her parents has nothing to do with men and is something a lot more adventurous.

The series will continue to highlight how the Larkins are far from the picture-perfect family but they will stick together to work through their problems.

The Larkins begins tonight at 8pm on ITV.
