Is Stephen Fry playing a villain in Doctor Who series 12?

Stephen Fry gets menacing in a new trailer for Doctor Who series 12.

A new trailer, which dropped on Monday afternoon, showed a brief glimpse of Stephen’s role.

He says ‘Welcome to the end of your lives’ – which suggests that whatever part he is playing, it can’t be anyone good.

As the new series hints at an overriding story arc as opposed to isolated, episodic adventure, could he be the new Big Bad that the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and her friends will have to face?

Of his role in the new series, Stephen said: ‘Short of being picked for a British space exploration programme and I readily concede that I’m past the age where I’d be considered (if I was ever the right age for such a posting) – then being in an episode of Doctor Who will certainly do as a very sweet second-place excitement.’

The Doctor adds: ‘People can save planets or wreck them. Be the best of humanity. Consider us your hope restored.’

She later quips: ‘Fancy a trip in the box?’

The Doctor and her friends Ryan (Tosin Cole), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham) will return in the episode Spyfall, which goes out on New Year’s Day.

The action-packed episode will be divided into two parts to kick off 2020 with a bang, airing for ten episodes on Sundays after that.

Other guest stars include Sir Lenny Henry, Robert Glenister and Goran Višnjić.

Sir Lenny, reunited with Broadchurch and Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall, said of being cast: ‘It was absolutely brilliant to be welcomed into the fantastical world of Doctor Who.

‘The nearest I have been to the TARDIS was when I played the Caribbean Doctor in the Lenny Henry Show , so as a life-long (hiding behind the sofa type) Doctor Who fan this is a very special moment for me.’

Doctor Who returns New Year’s Day on BBC One.
