Strictly Come Dancing viewers were excited for Musicals Week and the couples put on a spectacular show. The BBC competition series featured plenty of emotional moments, one of which took place during Tom Fletcher’s time on screen. The McFly star performed a Couple’s Choice dance to On My Own from Les Misérables and he received an interesting message.

Tom Fletcher, who has a personal love of theatre, got emotional after his performance which he dedicated to his sister, Carrie Hope Fletcher on Saturday night.

The judges enjoyed the performance he produced alongside his professional partner Amy Dowden.

But they said he needed to put more heart and emotion into his moves.

He may have received some constructive criticism but the star felt on top of the world after his routine.

Speaking to Claudia Winkleman after the judges’ critiques, he said: “Musical theatre is such a huge part of my life.

“This was the week I wanted to get to and I’m so proud that we were able to do that dance for my sister, who is on stage right now.”

Claudia told Tom they had a surprise message for him and Russell Crowe, who was in Les Misérables as Javert, appeared on the screen.

He said: “Hello Tom Fletcher, how are you, young man? Russell Crowe here. So, um. I hear you have succumbed to your passion for dancing.

“And I also hear you have done very well. I do expect you to achieve at a high level because that is in your nature.

“Do have an enjoyable dance, I can’t remember the details of what I was supposed to talk about, but the bottom line is all the best mate.”

There were a few giggles from the crowd as Russell laughed at his own expense.

Tom said it was “amazing” to hear from such an esteemed performer.

After his appearance, viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the “awkward” exchange.

Hayley said: “Russell Crowe has no idea who Tom Fletcher is, does he?”

Andi added: “An Oscar for Russell Crowe pretending he knows what’s going on. #strictly”

Mitten d’Amour joked: “Russell Crowe: Hello Tim, I hear it’s your birthd- [checks notes] doing a dance.”

Chris commented: “That Russell Crowe VT wasn’t strange at all… #Strictly.”

Just Saying added: “Awks ….that dreadful Russel Crowe video. Does he even remember who “young Tom” is! #Strictly” [Sic]

Some viewers wondered why the BBC chose Russell Crowe over other, more prominent theatre stars.

They picked up on how he was in the 2012 film, not the stage version of the show.

Conrad Brunstrom said: “Ah, Russell Crowe – the least musical man ever to appear in a movie musical – a man seemingly incapable of emoting to the basics of rhythm and melody. #Strictly”

However, some fans were thrilled to see such a huge star on their screens.

Tom scored a total of 31 points, putting him at joint-bottom of the leaderboard alongside Dan Walker.

Fans were outraged, with many feeling he was “undermarked” compared to other couples.

Strictly Come Dancing returns for the results show on Sunday on BBC One.
