Fans of Sherlock will be pleased to hear Benedict Cumberbatch may come back as the titular character. They have just enjoyed the new Netflix film, Enola Holmes, which tells the story of Sherlock’s teenage sister. Season five could still be coming to Netflix and the BBC after the creators teased more episodes. Here is everything we know about season five of the popular detective series.
When will Sherlock season 5 be released?
There is no official release date for a new series of Sherlock but we can expect the show to arrive in either 2022 or 2023.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman take the lead roles in the series, which ended back in 2017.
Co-showrunner Steven Moffat told Digital Spy: “I haven’t really thought about it. Mark [Gatiss, co-showrunner]’s been doing other stuff as well, so we haven’t sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.”
Moffat and fellow creator Mark Gatiss said they have been looking into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories for further inspiration.
During a question and answer session to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Sherlock’s debut, the creators discussed what sort of direction the main characters would take.
Who wil be in the cast of Sherlock season 5?
Of course it is hoped Benedict Cumberbatch will return as the main character, and he will be joined by Martin Freeman as Watson.
In the last series we met Sherlock’s sister Eurus Holmes (played by Sian Brooke) who Sherlock himself did not remember existed.
In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk Sian Brooke said she would love to come back to play Eurus.
She said: “It would be great, she is definitely a character I would love to revisit. You don’t get to play these parts every day, she’s abnormal and those sorts of parts are always great.
“She doesn’t respond or behave the way others do. I get asked questions about what would happen next to her. There is definitely more to the mind of that character.”
What will happen in the new series of Sherlock?
The new series should hopefully pick up where we left off, with Eurus Holmes safely back in the confinements of her secure unit.
The season four finale, The Final Problem, revealed Eurus to be an expert manipulator who gets thrills from taunting her detective brother.
Sherlock also discovered how she had actually killed his best friend ‘Redbeard’ as a child, having remembered the story very differently for all those years.
Both Sherlock and Watson remain companions at the end of the series, so all three characters could have their own stories in the next series.
The creators have shown an interest in the story called the Red-Headed League, which sees Professor Moriarty (Andrew Scott) attempt to rob a bank.

Is there a trailer for Sherlock season 5?
Sadly as there has been no official confirmation of a new series, a trailer is yet to be released.
Trailers do not usually drop until a couple of months before a show is due to air, so fans could be waiting for some time.
Fans are able to revisit the series and there are plenty of favourite clips from the show available to watch online.
They will have to watch this space to find out the official date for a new series trailer.
Back in January 14 Moffat said a fifth series had been planned but by the time the fouth series aired a final decision had not yet been made.
Both Cumberbatch and Moffat have shown an interest in continuing the series in the future, but no plans were put in place.
As Cumberbatch and Freeman has been extremely busy with other series, a final release date is still up in the air.
Cumberbatch has also starred in Dr Strange and 1971 recently, while Freeman is starring in a series called Breeders.
New stamps are being made which will feature hidden storyline details for the BBC series. The collection will be available from August 18, 2020.
