However, the film that the characters of Stranger Things probably know her best from is 1984’s Gremlins.
In the film, she plays Kate Beringer, the love interest of Billy Peltzer (played by Zach Galligan), who helps him defeat the Mogwai after he accidentally breaks one of the three Gremlins rules and gets Gizmo wet.

Since 1989, the actress, who is now 55, has been married to Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Kline.
They met an audition for the 1983 film The Big Chill.

In 1994, Cates retired from films to raise her children, only returning to the screen for 2001 film The Anniversary Party, which starred Cates, Kline and their two children.
