‘The Resident’ Season 5 Receives Another Mid-Season Delay, But Creator Amy Holden Jones Promises It’s Worth the Wait

Another change to FOX‘s mid-season schedule has brought an unfortunate update for The Resident fans. After previously pushing The Resident Season 5’s mid-season premiere forward one week, the network has now moved the episode back again. Many fans expressed disappointment over the delay, but The Resident creator Amy Holden Jones assured that it’s well worth the wait. Here’s what she said about the episode.

‘The Resident’ Season 5 mid-season premiere had a few scheduling changes

The Resident revealed via social media on Jan. 4 that it had changed the new episode’s release date from Feb. 1 to Jan. 25, one week sooner than expected. FOX didn’t provide an explanation for the change, but many fans were thrilled nonetheless.

Unfortunately, that exciting news hasn’t lasted long. The Resident took to Twitter on Jan. 11 to announce a delay for the season 5 winter premiere, as seen below.

“Our dearest besties: apologies for the scheduling changes, but we are pleased to announce that #TheResident will be back in a big way on February 1!” the tweet read.

The medical drama replied to a few fan responses, remaining apologetic and assuring that the episode would be here in no time.

“Thank you for the love. We’re 100 percent with you, and we can’t wait for y’all to see this episode,” another tweet from the show read.

‘The Resident’ creator Amy Holden Jones explained the season 5 delay

Thankfully, fans weren’t left completely in the dark regarding the reason for the change. Jones chimed in to the social media conversation to share what she knew. As is the case with many TV shows today, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused some delays.

“COVID issues altered the schedule for other shows, affecting ours. That’s all I know,” Jones wrote. “These days, it’s always COVID. We are shooting, cutting, and mixing on schedule and can’t wait to return.”

The Resident’s delay could have something to do with FOX’s musical drama Monarch, which received its own major delay. As Entertainment Weekly reported, FOX announced that the show would now premiere in the fall rather than its Jan. 30 release date. Thankfully, The Resident’s schedule change wasn’t that extreme.

As frustrating as the back-and-forth may be for fans, Jones promised that The Resident Season 5 Episode 11 would be worth the wait.

“It’s one of our best episodes ever,” she tweeted.

The new episodes will have two major storylines

The new episode remains a complete surprise for fans, as The Resident has yet to share any specific promo images or trailers. Hopefully, the network will give viewers a taste of the premiere soon.

In the meantime, The Resident executive producer Andrew Chapman teased some general storylines for the rest of season 5. He revealed to TVLine that Dr. Randolph Bell’s (Bruce Greenwood) medical diagnosis will have a major impact on his story going forward.

“How do you deal with your own diagnosis, your own illness, and your own ability to be a surgeon and of a certain age? Then what do you do? It’s a great question, and we’re going to dive into it headfirst,” he said.

Additionally, fans will learn more about new character Cade Sullivan (Kaley Ronayne). Apparently, Chastain Park Memorial Hospital‘s newest doctor has a mysterious past.

“The mystery of her past is something that is going to blend very much with the big, overarching theme of the second half of the season,” Chapman continued. “It will be extremely explosive… It’s very central, and what they find out about her will have direct consequences on the episodes going all the way to the finale of this season.”

The Resident Season 5 Episode 11 premieres on Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. Stay tuned to Showbiz Cheat Sheet for more updates.
