The Tower viewers go wild as they spot Emmerdale’s Robert Sugden actor Karl Davies

ITV viewers settled down to tune into new drama The Tower, led by a cast including Game of Thrones’ Gemma Whelan.

However, it was one of the supporting characters that had everyone talking, as eagle-eyed fans spotted DCI Tim Bailie is played by none other than former Emmerdale star Karl Davies.

The actor played Robert Sugden for four years from 2001 to 2005, before making another brief appearance in the village in 2009.

However, when soap bosses brought the popular character back in 2014, Karl, 39, chose not to reprise his role and actor Ryan Hawley stepped into his shoes instead.

So fans were thrilled to see Karl, who has also appeared in hit shows like Happy Valley and Game of Thrones, back on our screens.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Watching "The Tower" and its Robert Sugden, Karl Davies.’

Another excited Emmerdale fan added: ‘Robert Sugden in The Tower! #emmerdale.’

Soap fans were in for a further treat, too, as they realised there were plenty more famous faces from shows like Hollyoaks and EastEnders completing the cast list.

Central character Younes Mehenni is played by Nabil Elouahabi who is best known as EastEnders’ Tariq Larousi, who lived in Albert Square from 2003 to 2005.

Elsewhere, former Hollyoaks star Emmett J. Scanlan, who starred as Chester’s Brendan Brady, takes on the role of DI Kieran Shaw.

Gripping three-part series The Tower follows DS Sarah Collins (Gemma Whelan) – an “everyday detective” who is determined to crack the case.

In last night’s opening episode, Sarah and her team were called upon to investigate an incident at Portland Tower.

Tragically, they were too late as a veteran cop and teenage girl fell to their deaths from the top of a block of flats in south London.

However, rookie police officer Lizzie Adama (Tahirah Sharif) was still alive and standing on the top of the roof.

What happened on the roof, and what does Lizzie know that will help with the investigation?
