The Young Ones' Vyvyan star Ade Edmondson is unrecognisable now at 64

IT’S been almost 40 years since The Young Ones first aired on the BBC – and one of the actors looks completely unrecognisable since appearing on the show.

First airing in 1982, the classic British sitcom revolved around the hilarious lives of four grubby students sharing a house – but things didn’t always go as planned.

Among the cast, Vyvyan – played by Ade Edmondson – was one of the most memorable characters in the beloved series.

Ade, now 64, was hailed for his portrayal of the slightly psychotic punk Vyvyan in The Young Ones, which he wrote together with his collaborative partner Rik Mayal.

Along with starring in both The Young Ones and Bottom with Rik, Ade had his own lustrous TV career – and even appeared in BBC soap EastEnders from 2019 to 2020 as Daniel Cook.

Though best known for his comedy roles – including in 80s hit The Comic Strip Presents – he’s been in everything from Holby City and Jonathan Creek to Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Fans will remember Ade for his appearances in The Young Ones the most, though, who also appeared alongside fellow comics Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan.

From appearing on University Challenge to duetting with Cliff Richard, the show made waves in the cult comedy scene until they drove a bus off a cliff in the series conclusion.

Its legacy has lived on ever since, helping to bring alternative comedy to British TV in the 80s and making household names of its cast.

Earlier this year, Ade made the headlines when he got stuck on a window ledge after being locked out from cleaning his windows – and had to be rescued by the fire brigade.

Taking to social media, the actor said: “Just trapped myself on a window ledge whilst cleaning the windows.

“Had to ask a passerby to help. Fire brigade came. Small crowd gathered – thoroughly enjoying themselves.”
