Top 10 movies of 2021: From Spider-Man to Dune – Express.co.uk’s favourite films this year

Many of 2021’s films were delayed from the year before, so there was plenty for movie fans to enjoy over the past 12 months. James Bond’s No Time To Die was finally released but being a middling 007 movie it didn’t quite make our Top 10 this year despite our love for the spy franchise. Nevertheless, Express.co.uk’s Film section reporters have been polled and have provided an eclectic mix of our favourites released in UK cinemas and streaming services in 2021.

10. Supernova

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci star as a gay couple, one a musician and the other a novelist, who embark on a road trip as one of them battles dementia.

Wes Anderson’s latest is an anthology comedy following the death of Bill Murray’s editor of Kansas newspaper The French Dispatch. According to his wishes in his will, the final issue will include four articles by the publication’s journalists which are then acted out throughout the movie accordingly.

Emerald Fennell’s Oscar-winning movie stars Carey Mulligan as Cassie, who pretends to be drunk before confronting predatory men after her best friend was raped and no action was taken.

7. Spencer

Kristen Stewart portrays Princess Diana in this surreal fantasy based on real events that follows Christmas with the Royal Family at Sandringham in 1991.

6. Palm Springs

It’s Groundhog Day for a wedding guest before he accidentally traps another in the same time loop and romance blossoms between them.

Steven Spielberg dared to remake the iconic movie musical and 60 years later could well be headed for Oscars glory after critical acclaim.

4. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

The first of two Marvel movies on this year’s list is the MCU’s first Asian-led cast solo movie, following a martial arts master who confronts his past and immortal father.

Andrew Garfield stars as Jonathan Larson in the late Rent creator and composer’s semi-autobiographical musical directed by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi epic of warring factions and families on a distant planet stunned audiences and luckily for its fans has seen Part 2 green-lit

Our No 1 movie this year was also’s 2021’s highest-grossing and saw a multiverse blockbuster spectacular with all three live-action iterations of Spider-Man to date sharing the big screen together.
