She was a blockbuster and critically acclaimed actress in the 1980s. As well as the ball-busting Charlie in Top Gun, McGillis starred in Amish drama Witness and the Oscar-winning The Accused. The California native continues to act but keeps a far lower profile than her 1986 co-star. With attention focussed back on all things Top Gun and no sighting of Val Kilmer in the recent trailer, will McGillis also return? Where is she now?
McGillis has stepped away from blockbusters and takes occasional smaller roles on the big and small screen. One of her last TV roles was in 2014’s Z Nation, where she appeared as feisty as always.
The last time the actress hit headlines was in 2016, after a shocking attack in her North Carolina home.
She was left with scratches and bruises and posted an upsetting image of her at home with an oxygen tube on social media.
The star was also spotted out and about in North Carolina in the most recent public photographs.
McGillis was also pictured on Instagram, looking very happy on set for a new web series, Stages.
Although she maintains an active social media life, her content is primarily political and social commentary, with almost no personal images at all.
It is unlikely she is being held back as a surprise appearance in Top Gun, though. And certainly not for her leading man to rekindle their old on-screen flame.
At 62, McGillis is five years Cruise’s senior but, for example, he was paired with Sarah Wright in American Made (20 years his junior) and Rebecca Ferguson (22 years his junior) in Mission Impossible Fallout.
As for Val Kilmer, he rashly announced his involvement before the film was even officially confirmed and had to publish a retraction.
Since then, he has appeared on cast listings for the movie and Cruise has spoken about his co-star’s battle with cancer, but there has been no sign of Kilmer’s Iceman in any of the advance publicity, including the recent trailer.
Top Gun: Maverick is released in UK cinemas on July 17, 2020
