Tori Spelling: ‘90210’ Reboot Provides Cast This “Rare” Privilege

The news is out: Beverly Hills 90210 will grace the small screens once again; this time, revamped as BH90210. With the original cast – Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth, Shannen Doherty, Jason Priestly, and more – back to bring the heat to a vicious boil, the reboot is set to air on August 7. Though the show will take on a new format, with each character portraying a “heightened” version of themselves, the number string “90210” will always have that signature ring to it.

No matter what gets altered in BH90210, just seeing those numbers on this screen conjures an instant sense of nostalgia – and dramatic primetime memories of yesteryear.

Unfortunately, the show will face one great loss, as Luke Perry is no longer with us; however, the series will provide the worthy tribute fans are hoping for. Our expectations are high, for the original was one of the most successful shows of its time.

Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth sat down to discuss the reboot, how the show will work, and how – as adults – their perspectives have changed. Tori Spelling went on to discuss the “rare” opportunity the reboot has granted the cast.

Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth talk ‘BH90210:’ Coming back as adults

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth revealed that they are both quite involved in the writing and the cast – as a whole – “has spent time going over stories and…recollections of how things happened back then,” according to Spelling. Spelling goes on to explain:

“We found out a lot. You perceive things totally different, too, when you’re in your 20s as opposed to your 40s. And I think it’s very rare in life that you’re able to go back and say, like, “Gosh I would have done things differently or handled this situation differently.” But all of a sudden here we are! Just like with the photoshoot the other day, the promo shoot, we were doing a group shot together, and we did those every year for 10 years, and never thought we would go back. And it’s interesting, because when I was in the moment I never appreciated them, and then when I got older and I would tell my kids about it, I was like, “Awww….” In my head, it’s a bummer — I wish I had appreciated every moment of that. And then here we are again, so it’s like a do-over.”

Tori Spelling explains that few people are granted a do-over in life – an opportunity to say and act on a series of events that happened decades ago. With the cast back to star in BH90210, they are granted this privilege.

The cast – now having aged out of the hormonal, sometimes entitled, other times quick-tempered adolescent years – can reflect from a place of wisdom. They can look back with a sense of understanding to see where they may have done wrong, and what they may have taken for granted. Rarely does such a famous cast regroup to revive a series, but 90210 managed to pull it off.

Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling talk ‘BH90210’ characters: resemblance to real life

BH90210 plans to take the characters and incorporate a little bit of reality into the mix.

In the show, the group is convening within the “parameters of putting together a reboot,” as Garth explains. Thus, their “real-life” personas will come to the table.

Tori Spelling’s character is married with a lot of kids in BH90210. Sound familiar? Garth’s character is a woman in her 40s, “in a multiple-marriage situation, dealing with teenage girls, dealing with Hollywood, being in the limelight again and facing all those fears…” as Garth explains.

Garth goes on to state that BH90210 will fictionalize all the characters’ “home lives to a certain degree,” as this is still TV. However, their characters, when not working on the reboot in the series, may appear eerily similar to their real-life counterparts.
