A COOK ABROAD

Season final ★★★

8.30pm, SBS Food

A Cook Abroad

It’s not exactly ground-breaking telly but it’s been surprisingly enjoyable joining a series of British chefs as they take us to an inspirational or formative overseas destination, including Hairy Biker Dave Myers in Egypt, Masterchef’s John Torode in Argentina, and Rachel Khoo in Malaysia. In tonight’s final instalment, Rick Stein is in the most exotic location of all – Australia – eschewing seafood (mostly) in favour of bush tucker in New South Wales, and wallaby in Tasmania.

S.W.A.T.

★★★

9.10pm, Seven

SWAT

The thing that saves S.W.A.T. from being complete nonsense is its construction. The way the shots are framed, the editing, the ambient sound and the music all combine to create a really visceral experience. The fact that the plots are ludicrous and the dialogue clunky is rather beside the point. S.W.A.T. also reliably delivers intriguing starting points for its stories, as happens in tonight’s first episode when the bad guys are masquerading as – wait for it! – a S.W.A.T. team.

8 DAYS

New series ★★★1/2

10.55pm, SBS

8 Days

What would you do if you had eight days to live? That’s the question – or one of them – at the heart of this carefully-observed German thriller. A giant meteor is about to hit Western Europe. The US, China and Russia have expressed extreme reluctance to take refugees and only the one-per cent are being granted “exit permits”. What unfolds among the rest of the population is a fascinating study in politics and human nature, and following the journeys of the disparate characters is compelling.
