Vera (played by Brenda Blethyn) is one of the UK’s most beloved detectives and the ITV drama has amassed fans throughout the world. In a recent interview, Brenda addressed one of the possible secrets to the show’s success as she compared the hit series with other successful murder mysteries.

The actress revealed her husband Michael had introduced her to BBC’s Line of Duty.

She praised the television crime thriller and watched every season in one go.

“It’s in a class of its own, really. It’s different to all the others,” she said.

“And Vera is different to all the others, too. I love the fact that things aren’t in competition.”

However, Brenda admitted she finds viewers’ fascination with crime surprising.

The actress continued: “Maybe it makes us feel fortunate that we’re not in that awful situation and sitting on your sofa at home with your cup of tea or half a lager or whatever, it is so far removed from you that you feel lucky?

“But it’s quite disturbing, really. You do see some pretty gruesome things but with Vera, that is avoided at all costs.

“You never see the nitty-gritty or any of the bad injuries that might be described.”

“There was an episode where someone was found in an incinerator in a meat factory and we carefully placed things in front of the body so that the audience wouldn’t be offended,” she told The Sydney Morning Harold.

Vera recently returned to ITV after a long break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Season 11 premiered in August rather than in its usual time January time slot.

Fans were thrilled to see Vera investigating the murder of a local builder.

However, after one further episode a week later, Vera has disappeared from the schedule.

Viewers of the drama will likely have to wait until 2022 for the third instalment of the season.

Speaking ahead of the most recent episodes, Brenda addressed retiring from the iconic role.

She said: “At the end of filming every season I think, ‘Oh, thank the Lord I’m going home. Never again.’”

“But it’s like having a lovely slap-up meal. You’ve eaten too much. You couldn’t eat another morsel,” she added. “And you’re shown the menu again. ‘Take it away, take it away!’

“But then a week later you get hungry again. So by the time I go back to Newcastle again I’m always very much looking forward to it.

“It rather depends on the Covid situation and putting my priorities in order.”

Vera is available to watch on ITV Hub.
