Alex has become a familiar face of weeknight evening television having hosted The One Show regularly since 2010. The presenter welcomed two permanent co-hosts in Jermaine Jones and Ronan Keating earlier this year following Matt Baker’s exit from the BBC programme in March 2020. However, the mother of three is currently absent from proceedings and here is everything you need to know about when she will return.

Why is Alex Jones not hosting The One Show?

The mother of three announced she was pregnant with hers and husband Charlie Thomson’s third child on the show in March.

In the months which followed, viewers watched as the bump slowly developed before the presenter hosted her last show in early August.

Alex gave birth to the couple’s first daughter, Annie, just a few days after her departure and she broke the news on her social media pages.

She has made a few great appearances on The One Show to speak with her co-stars about the new arrival over the last couple of weeks.

However, she is returning from maternity leave earlier than expected to host a very special edition of the programme.

When is Alex Jones returning to The One Show?

It has been announced Alex will be returning to hosting duties on Monday, September 20, 2021, to coincide with a monumental event.

She will be back as a presenter to oversee the reveal of The One Show and RHS Garden of Hope at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

The episode will air in its regular time slot of 7pm on BBC One before the rest of the week’s instalments return to their usual format.

This will be a one-off appearance for Alex, who will return to maternity leave after the botanical-themed edition of the show airs.

With regards to her permanent return to the show, it is likely Alex won’t be back on the infamous red sofa until next year.

When she took maternity leave after giving birth to her second son in 2019, the presenter was absent from the show for some months.

In fact, she was off-air from May 2019, when she gave birth to Kit until January 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic hit the UK.

Having made intermittent appearances in a guest capacity already, it seems the mother of three is eager to get back to work.

Who has replaced Alex Jones on The One Show?

At the moment, there are a variety of guest presenters holding the fort whilst Alex is away on maternity leave.

So far, famous faces hosting the show have included former Strictly Come Dancing It Takes Two host, Zoe Ball.

Broadcaster Angela Scanlon has also featured in the hosting role as well as gold medal-winning Olympian, Sam Quek.

Former children’s television presenter, Angellica Bell has also stepped into Alex’s spot over the last few weeks.

Sports presenter Sam is the latest face to join the rotation of guest presenters on the show, with the others filling in for Alex when she was on maternity leave in the past.

Zoe is also a new addition after quitting her role on It Takes Two earlier this year.

A permanent replacement as such, to hold down the fort until next year, has not been announced by the BBC.

However, Jermaine and Ronan will continue to hold down their positions on the show, taking it in turns to co-host.

The One Show airs weeknights at 7pm on BBC One.
